1961 Power Catch and release scarcity of good runways, seems that the high population can't keep up with rapid growth of the genus. 11 of the minutae were dead intraps: 5SS, a 19-1/2-grain ? with CL, 3FF with interior scan, 2 with embryo (6+3). May 22 at 3 p.m. Put 87 Shrews in Minitz triangle, direct line toward Brant's area, beginning at Artichokes. Numerous cuttings but not many well-established runways. May 23 at 8:30 a.m. Traps held 6 mice, 12 minutae (all alive, saved for May), 1 Peromyscus maniculatus, 1 Peros truei, 1 Sorex, 1 leithrus, and 1 deer mouse. Kept the leithrus, an adult. No juv. leithrus yet this spring, although a few lactating ?f. Moved traps at 4 p.m. to the lower line in Minitz triangle in Tilden (87 traps) May 24 at 8:30 a.m. 19 minutae, 8 mice, 3 Peromyscus maniculatus. No leithrus. May 26. at 6 p.m. set 38 Shrews in Minitz triangle in Tilden along fence direct to new Dog Run. May 27 Traps held 2 old leithrus, 11 minutae, 3 mice, 1 Peromyscus maniculatus. Lots of mustard in full bloom. May 28 Put 86 Shrews in field north of pasture, creek, at 7 p.m. Lots of blooming mustard 8 feet tall. Weather cool & cloudy. Full moon. May 29 at 8 a.m. Traps held 33 minutae, 5 leithrus (old) and 5 mice.
