hundred yards of old trail had been scraped so recently as to destroy any scat that might have been [illegible] found on them. Saw cover of young quail on area; some grasshoppers. 3 bundles of bird feathers, 50 sets of gopher diggings. Total collection of scat = 1.3 lbs., containing grasshoppers plus 10 minnow, 1 beaver, 1 lizard, 1 bird, and 3 gophers. July 30 Went for walk along ridge above my Tidden area and saw that 5 to 10 acres of the southwest corner of my area have been disked disced or bulldozed. aug 25 Went to Jersey Island in the Delta with Davis and Lynde. Study area is ± 200 acres of pasture with cattle. Grass green, lush, thick, excellent microtine cover. at 6:30 a.m. there were several barn owls, several short- eared owls, 2 or more marsh hawks, and about 20 biters hunting over the pasture. Put out 38 Sherman (rolled oats) and 42 Musser traps (cornmeal) at 7:00 a.m. Some mouse sign, but not a lot. The cover is so thick that there are few "offroad" runways. Didn't see any place with more than 1 foot of [illegible] runway visible. In the mud along the river saw tracks of coon, opossum, rat; and along the road, cat + dog. Watched biters catching microtine with rapidity and ease, 3/4 lbs of their stoops were successful. Talked with the owners (Holsey) who were quite knowledgeable, interested, and cooperative. at 11 a.m. the traps held 1 musk (parasite & methoxen copia
