1957 Reason Nov. 28. Shasta Co. with Quay & L. Looked for gopher diggings along Redding-Burney road. Between Redding and Montgomery Creek saw only one collection of diggings; these in a green, grazed pasture. At Montgomery Creek found none in the big meadows and pastures near the school, east of the creek, but several good sites of mounds in a pasture near the center of town (south of road, west of creek). This was a green, grazed slope with pear tree and cow peas; turkeys & chickens scratching at gopher diggings. Soil red and coarse with some bed-rock exposures, but easy digging with spade. Left 7 traps, noon. More gopher diggings 2 mi. NE Burney. None seen between Montgomery Creek & Burnley except in a vacant lot in the center of Burney. Set about 13 gopher traps 2 mi. NE Burney in grassy glades among yellow pines. Soil red, coarse, containing gravel, but easy digging with moderate effort for 1-2 inches of frost. Nov. 29 noon. One gopher at Burnley and 2 at Montgomery Creek.
