Academy, Fresno Co., Calif. Arrived with class about
12:30 Pm and started setting gopher traps near the cemetery
½ mile NW of Academy. Soil mostly hard red, but some
very sandy & gray near the river (flowing). Very little
recent gopher signs, but made perhaps 15 good sets.
Then looked at the Granite Quarry (only one good set of
red soil) and the Blue Ridge Ranch (½ mi NE Academy)
where a new Bermuda grass lawn had some good
diggings (light fluffy gray soil) and where a very hard
red wheat? field had a few good diggings. Set about
15 traps at these places about 3 Pm, and two or three

along another road ¼ mi N Academy.
At 5:30 pm T J Shemans (rolled oats) along the
grassy-weedy edges of the wash and around a
corral. Saw lots of ground squirrels. Since morning
coming with lots of locusts and other insects
flying but saw no bats or owls.

We ended up with 20 gopher traps set near the cemetery,
most in hard red soil but some in soft gray or even
pure sand. Caught only one gopher in these (8:1 in gray
soil just in front of camper). One in red soil was
sprung with hair. At Blue Ridge Ranch the 15 traps caught
4 gophers, all in gray soil with green grass. 5 Lemniscate
