Oct. 28 Academy, Fresno Co., Calif. Arrived with class about 12:30 Pm and started setting gopher traps near the cemetery ½ mile NW of Academy. Soil mostly hard red, but some very sandy & gray near the river (flowing). Very little recent gopher signs, but made perhaps 15 good sets. Then looked at the Granite Quarry (only one good set of red soil) and the Blue Ridge Ranch (½ mi NE Academy) where a new Bermuda grass lawn had some good diggings (light fluffy gray soil) and where a very hard red wheat? field had a few good diggings. Set about 15 traps at these places about 3 Pm, and two or three 4 along another road ¼ mi N Academy. At 5:30 pm T J Shemans (rolled oats) along the grassy-weedy edges of the wash and around a corral. Saw lots of ground squirrels. Since morning coming with lots of locusts and other insects flying but saw no bats or owls. Oct. 29 We ended up with 20 gopher traps set near the cemetery, most in hard red soil but some in soft gray or even pure sand. Caught only one gopher in these (8:1 in gray soil just in front of camper). One in red soil was sprung with hair. At Blue Ridge Ranch the 15 traps caught 4 gophers, all in gray soil with green grass. 5 Lemniscate wont traps light maneuver At 8:30 set traps in a green meadow along a creek 1½ mi NE of Academy (dark gray soil) and about 15 traps along the road SW of Academy.
