(1964 Pearson Feb. 16 Examined lower ½-inch wire enclosure in Orinda pasture. Feets of oats, geranium, 1 Rumex, no mustard, surrounding is oats & geranium and a little mustard. Not much different. Upper enclosure contained about equal number of mustard, coriander, and oats; a few geraniums. Outside is mustard and coriander but no oats or grasses. The survival of oats inside the enclosure is completely convincing. Feb. 17 as many as 6 brush rabbits seen sometimes while driving down our driveway. 2 mice/graze on lawn frequently, usually when crow sparrows are grazing also. They frequently come within 1 foot of each other, but pay no attention. Twice I have seen a pale cat on the Orinda X-roots island. Quite saw a dark black & brown cat on Krebs area yesterday. Feb. 18 at 4 P.M. (sunny) set Calhoun Col 3, 120 sunflower seeds with peanut butter. Only 1 or 2 runaways seen. No cuttings or droppings. One sparrow broke, no cats. Inspected the "firebreak transect" described March 21, 1963. This year, downhill from the firebreak where nothing grew last spring, there are lots of oats, mustard and coriander. Feb. 19 Night clear, some wind, no dew. Traps held 1 Jerusalem cricket, 0 mice.
