1967 Rearranged July 8 To Hastings Reservation with Carol and Judy Johnsons. At 7 p.m. put 32 Sherman traps on the edge of grass-elm trees on top of School House Hill. This included about 5 traps on a branch line extending down into "pine" elm trees. There is a fringe of deer weed (yellow-flowered legume) around this and other patches of clover, as well as occasional deer weed scattered through the elms. Enough forbs and grasses in the elms to provide food for mice. Weather clear, not hot, no moon. July 9 Traps at 8:30 a.m. held 5 Peromyscus truei (3 adult ♀♀ with corys, muffs, and 2 adult ♂♂). One of them was about 15 yrs in, the rest around the edge. Released all. Elms were blooming. There was an enormous quantity of rabbit droppings near the brush-grass interface. I saw no rabbits but Verbeek & Carol saw one and agreed that it was a brush rabbit, not a cottontail like those common around the buildings. Perbeeks cared study easily by using drift fences with traps opening in them. July 10 Put out offer salmon flies in Tilden Park at 5:30 p.m. (60 museum specials + peanut butter). Deer, not hot, new moon. Lush grass cover (all dry) but no microtine sign and almost no carnivore droppings. July 11 Morning clear, no fog. At 8:10 a.m., ran traps with Diane Walter and Carolyn Cavalier. 2 springing, rest untouched. Ants or pillbugs over all.
