Holmes, R 1962 Journal 28 may Barrow, Alaska Arrived at 1000 at Barrow "International" airport. The general appearance of the snow cover in the vicinity of ARL & Denali was that spring is late in coming. Snow is still covering most areas - except for patches of ground near Volh's Ave & near the denudation sites. Spent the morning getting settled + straightening up the lab. [2 Golden Plovers in Fprint 26 may. (Cade).] In the afternoon - drove to The beach ridge, central marsh, & gasoline ridge. The top of these elevated areas are beginning to clear but even here the exposed areas are glazed with a layer of ice. Very little sign of limming activity was noted; 1 Glaciarous Gull was seen. After supper, drove to Volh, Denali Gate, Denali Ridge, Arrowick & Footprint Lake. Snow conditions in the area are about the same as central marsh except here are a few more open glass covered ridge tops. Actually, the snow does not seem to be very deep + several warm days cover cause quite a change. Birds: A. Longspurs; Snow Bunting - 15t; Wheatear - 2; Sandhill Crane - mostly near shore 3; Glaciarous Gull - 40t; 2 Snow Owls.

Holmes,R. 1962 Journal 28 may Barrow, Alaska. The wagon at Stenartik was checked. It had been broken into during Dr Wright's + numerous supplies were missing. No Shorebirds seen today. Only ones reported are the 2 Golden Plovers by code m 26 may. 29 may Barrow, Alaska Weather cloudy with light snow falling all during the day. Wind from NtE- The morning - shifting to SE during the afternoon evening. Snow condition seem about the same; more exposed areas were found on the high bluff, along the short Elson Lagoon before the duck camp at Bennie + Stepik Slough. The permanent depth varies from 0 to 1 1/2" (in the mossy areas). 0600-1200 - cleanup lot + skinnny cutatear. 1230-1630. - Drove to Elson Lagoon: Longspurs (L.L.); Snow Buntings (S.B.); Reddy Turnstones (R.T.); Pectoral Sandpipers (P.S.); Red-backed (RB) and B. S.) Sandpipers, Golden Plovers. Drove across Beach Ridge (Sev. 87 L.L.) to Voth area + Then back to camp. 1 RB + Sev. 22 seen + 1/2 heard in the area.

3. Holmes,R 1962 Journal 29 may BARROW, ALASKA Several Large (1024) flock (Eider - most 87 were seen flying over the tundra near The Shore of Eison Lagoon - so. The duck Camp. (Common + king were identified). Continued snowing until midnight - at which time most (The old suns + roadway were covered with 1/2 powderly snow. 30 May BARROW, ALASKA 0800-1200. Drove to bluffs along Eison lagoon. Weather clear & calm. Birds: 3 Ruddy Turnstones, flock of 7 Dunlin, 3 G. Plovers, few pnt Longspur + buntings; 1 Knot; 300 Eider (200 king - 130 well we commons; 70-king); 1 Glauces Bull 1330-1730. Drove to Denali Gate + beyond the Creek which drains into village slough. 1 Red Neck displaying new Britten's wite (can't be sure comp.); 2 Snow Bun; 1 Clift Swallow; Semi-palmented Solg - 6; Ruddy-necked Sandpipers; Longspur + buntings. Coded event 3-8 p.m.) picked up in the NE during the afternoon. By this afternoon - The snow was really starting to melt - The ridgy areas near (illegible) Creek were almost clear (Snow); Gash Ridge was 2/3 clear + The snow seemed to be going fast. The birds seem to like the Grassy Slope + ridges where are least affected - rather than the high land.

Holmes,R, 1962 Journal 30 may BARROW, ALASKA polyzona. The apples particularly to shorebirds 1930-2130. Drove to Uoth Area - to check again on E. rubicollis - could not locate it again. Trid to record red-bird displays but recorder gave out!! See. RB, S.R., B.S., L.L. soon. Headed east to gaslin ridge & De Bevel ridge - the top 1/2 of these are starting to open up & considerable ground is exposed. but no birds seen except an occasional Lovespur. The Birds are only in the grassy-edge areas. 6 Wh-tr. Breez; 2 Old Sptears 31 may Barrow, Alaska Spend morning preparing specimens + checking supply out of the stalls room. In the afternoon - no weasel was available - so I worked in the lab & had a talk with Drew. Drove to De Bevel ridge off supply lot weasel broke down & I walked in. Two glaucous Gulls seen in the Air now. Weather stayed below freezing all day - with cold 50-55 wind blowing + a low cloud layer. Snow fell at intervals during the day. 1 june BARROW, ALASKA 0800-1200 Drove to bluff along Elsa Lagoon. In- just 1/4 Whistling Shryl to Dookpile Slough. Weather overcast with 15mph East wind.

Holmes,R 1962 Journal 5. 1 June BARROW, ALASKA There are now patches of clear ground 5 to 50' in diameter on the bluffs. There are more less in number. They do not extend out (m.) to the hundred very far. The top 1/2 beach ridge is also becoming clear - but only a few longspur are seen there. Nearly all the shorebirds seen to date - have been in these large bluffy areas: 1 Baird Sandpiper, 38', 17 Longspur; 30+ Dunlin - some paired some in flocks; 28' Pectoral Sandpiper (+1♀); 10 Ruddy Turnstones, pr. 1 Golden Plover [1 flock of 11 PB, 4 Turnsty, 36P + 18' Pectoral Sep]. 1300-1530. - went to Voth's Area - the high ground on the east side of the Voth road is quite open - 1 area 300 x 100' - Din had a flock of 12 Dunlin; 5 Pectoral + 1 Baird. Another Baird Sandpiper went down road near the traplines - as well as at least 3 Sanderling. Scattered pairs feeding + or rather, Dunlin even found where the 100s per ground. 1 White-tailed Goose See map on next page for rough level & contour crevations :

Holmes, FT 1962 Journal 2 June Barrow, Alaska Many Spt - The lab - prepara; specimen & chickin soil samples. Quad edge samp contained Sw. Tipped (Worse). 1300-1630- Mabor & went to Olson Lyon between Wolzzeblog + Oskpile Sloughs: Red-bolt Sqp - numerous (30+); 4 Pectoral (1 pt) Sqp; 3 Rudely Turnstone; 5 Barnacle Gaezar; 1 Wh-hr Goose; many Longspurs; Sw. bunting; 5 Common Eider. At Val Arc - 1 Golden Plover, 2 Semi-pel Songeze - 4t Dunlin. Wheate overcat - quit (on at time - light (5-wppl) wind for the work. Generally warm - snow was getting soft & mushy in places. No snow is going roped along The Elze Bluffs & 1/2 Bluff - but Still seen grunt deep i centre Marsh along the bleed edge. The steel are vast area covered by snow - which we not yet expired. 3 June Barrow, Alaska Frozd. all morning - but very little (it was Shelley). Worked In The lab & specimen & soil samples, 1338-1630. Holmes R 1962 Journal 4 June Barrow, Alaska Drove with Yapp to VoR Area + then across to Elsa Lajom - returning via The beach ridge. Weather was partly clear - with broken fog lifting & the settling again. Light Cauterly wind. 2 Sanderlings near Britta's Area - Semipal, Semi-pal & Turnstone. Longspurs, Dunloup - 1 Snow Owl just SOV VoR Area. 1 Pectoral, See. Dunlin + R. Turnstone on Elsa Bluff. In the afternoon - returned to Britta-VoR Area - saw 3 Sanderling (Depr. of 1 Othe - well marked bird). Semi-pal & Dunlin - 1 Pectoral in Britta's Area. It seems now that Dunlins are moving out to areas That are just becoming exposed. They can see I hear now i most places - In Britta's Area to VoR Area - or The slope S. & E Plot in the next plot - 2 De open fender near Elsa Lajom. Pectorals, not seen to be getting established with 2-3 Semipal mouls near Elsa + 1 in Britta's Area. Semipal are distributed along pockets, Salt layer & VoR Creek - but not anywhere else. Holms,8 1962 Journal 4 Jun Barrow, Alaska not yet very numerous. The snow conditions are such not much ground is exposed yet- but what regulates the number of birds moving into the area - since no strenth Holes are seen - They just appear to birds occupying the available habitat. - Must keep this in mind. 5 Jun Barrow, Alaska Morning spent in lab working a specimen & external content. In the afternoon, I drove Br. Hon's & John's Area - where considerable ground is exposed on the bluff over Lagoon & road on the ridge that runs west Toward the village. - looked about halfway between D. & V.; (4:02) - 2 flock; 1 Kender & Wated pairs - several part Semi-polar Sap ; 1 Baird Selp ; 1 Colder Plovi; 2 pr. A. Tremstons ; 1 Snowy Owl; Longspurs, buntings, 3 Sanderling (1 with a flock of Dunlin), 3 Pintail, 20 Blanous Geese (incl. 2-3rd year birds - [coll. by D.A. Holmes,R 1962 Journal 5 June Barrow, Alaska was starting to accumulate. Snow bare & crusty. Lemming signs are generally poor - are most parts of the tundra - some runway activity & seemingly fresh pellets are seen only occasionally - A yet - only the byltic habitats are exposed & when the drought lowlands are eventually further frozen more sign may be found. The Drum area (behind spi) seen to be the most productive & to show the best sign. Cache has collected several Dew & Galls & Snow Owls are concentrating in the area. 6 June 0800-1200. Weather overcast - light NE wind - cold - all ponds were frozen & snow was crusty. By 1100' many pond were become frost ice & snow not softening. On p.15 of E. after - There is a small area existing Snow condensate today. The top of the Bear Ridge is covered clean & snow - as are all the bluffs along Elson, middle salt Lagoon (incl. Brinton's both sides), recent ridge village sloughs. The Dorothea plot is still covered - only a few broken 1 gram are seen poking through at the very right hand area. A patch 40'x 60'

Holmes,R 1962 Journal 8 June Barrow, Alaska Morning spent in lab working a specimen. Sullwan arrive late in the morning, as did Gerry Stevens. Weather overcast - 10mph East Wind blowing. By afternoon - The sky was partially clear - & by evening - Peter was shining brightly (until c. 2100). The snow stayed hard during the morning & was still crunchy at 1300 - but by 1700 - everything was quite slushy, great and I snow meter Meant: At top of the beach ridge - part of Elson Lagoon Fluffs & Uth Area - exposed. 1300-1630. Drove to Elson lagoon - when sea ice floes & Peatrees were seen moving South; 2 Curled Sandpipers; 1 Golden Plover, Sev. Dunlin (no flush - snowgroup 14 [illegible] lawn), Longspur-Hunting - 2 Long-billed Dowitchers. 1930-2200. Drove to Uthbrow - watch Sev. Holmes, R. 1962 Journal 10 June Barrow, Alaska Here, arrived in a late morning. Next went to Elsm Bluffs - N.W. of Wabikick bay & The Beach Ridge - Central Marsh - SRI. Several flocks of Pectorals. Sev. displaying Dunlin & Brails, pmarine jangars courting; Snowy Owl, Yellow Wagtail; Sandhill Cranes -. In the evening Nines + I went to Bri Hm's Area + Barrelridge: Black-bellied Plover, Golden Plover, 2 Long-billed Dowitchers; Sev. Dunlin, Semipalmated & Pectoral displaying, 4 Stellar Eiders, Sev. Pintails + Old Squaw. Red Phalaropes? Weather today - clear - no wind - Temperature up to 60°F - fantastic June day! Holmes,R. 1962 Journal 11 June Barrow, Alaska water underneath - making for difficult walking. The ponds on the hill at the insect plots are starting to open up + will be open complete within < couple 1 days. Numerous jaegers (P.marinus) - mostly single Spain - occasionally 3+ - sea flying over Volk Area + Central Mewel. A pair seemed to be settled on the w. side / central marsh - near Meadow Lake & area. Pair in Van Slyck - in both cases - Dr. for birds & ground. - Several Snow Geese seen - Beaver Ridge. The amount of aerial displaying by Shorebirds was again quite good. Dr. Dr. every - went to Elson Lagoon - 10:00 / Wobblelay Slope - weather still clear - snow getting softest softer - lagoons are (The B.A.) were opened up today: 13 Dovekicks - 2 Curlew Selp. - 8 Pectoral Sandpipers - R. Holmes,R. 1962 Journal 12 June Barrow, Alaska Dunlin, Baitel, Sem-yet Lags - 2 Snow Geese flying South along Elsin; Portals to old Squan in Cut- marsh Ponds. Weather slightly overcast in the morning - clearing but still parts cloudy during afternoon - warm - light breeze from East. Snow going fast - large area of open water - edge of mineral now exposed - area between B.R. & Elsin Lagoon - flushy ice - Several areas of Tundra which have been covered - now showing signs of Lemmings - several Lemmings seen. Afternoon spent in same area - Evening at Mullen's with Pitekler & working notes. 13 June Barrow, Alaska Worked in loft until 1000 - Then went to Dunnet Plot - took Sample - over 3 prch open. Arms around out - arrow. VTH 'Loki' (stomp) At gooselake edge to Terns - picking up Pitekler, returned to A.R.L. Bird activity moderate. After lunch - Pitekler & I went North to Elsin Lagoon - could not find E. ferregrinio. In the evening I went with Britten & Ann - saw Semi-palmated to Narids - 3 pr. R.B. Weather overcast in the morning with strong (10 mph - N.E.) wind - Sunny with light breeze during the afternoon & evening.

Holmes, R. 1962 Journal 14 June Barrow, Alaska 0530-1730. Sullivans & I went to joshin's ridg - ducked traps - in slope? (snow) plot - but last slough was not crossable. Tracked so o around dry lake - to shrub. We returned plot & returned via gaswell. Weather clear & sunny - light 5-10mph NW wind. Snow meter lost - and left now in trough & other protected areas. Melt water collected in all basins & boughs - some sloughs are not open yet - tried difficult. In the evening, P. Felle & Q went to Bent Ridge & worked over - 5-1 mcdale salt lagoon. N. wind, sunny, clear. There has been very little bird activity during the past 4 days I for weather - display at least only occasionally & birds seen quite scattered. 15 June Barrow, Alaska morning spent in the lab writing notes + preparing specimens. In the afternoon, I went to Dr. B. Ridy, heading for Elson Coop - when & sank a vessel, & by the time I worked back to camp, saw another. Holmes, R. 1962 Journal 15 June Barrow, Alaska in the low sixties - This continued through the early afternoon, but by evening dark cloves & cold winds came and settled in. It was cold & foggy by 3000. - with some rain. In the evening I drove Dr. Klaus Schmidt-Koernig from Duke University to the Beast & Gosline Ridges & checked the area for shorebirds - little activity was noted - apparently since it was raining. 16 June Shannon & godwit & banded the insect sample #1 during the a.m. In the afternoon - Hines & I Josh Pfeifer to Bear Ridge & then went to Elvir Lagoon - where we found at least 5 Curlew Sandpipers & numerous Red Phalaropes, c. flock of Black-tailed Sandpipers, Sew. Dunlin, Sew. R. Turnstone, 1 Sew. Gold Plover, 3 Pacific Gull - & Sew. Pomarine Jaegers. One across central marsh to Cache - with Stays & insect plot - insect sample #2 was taken. Returned at 1745. In the evening, Pfeifer & I returned to Elvir Lagoon - I saw 2 Curlew Saps. Weather overcast during the morning but clear (foggy) in the afternoon & evening. 10 mph SE wind blowing during most of the day.

Holmes, R. 1962 Journal 17 June Barrow, Alaska Beard Ridge checked in The a.m. - several Dunlin & Black-phase Pom & Para jaegers, Golden Plovers, sex. Snow Ducks. In the afternoon, I still went to Als a lager - looked at a pair of Curlew Seag. - Alfa Sugar, Silver...I went to Dr. Ha's cabin to record bird songs & locate nests - saw, not wounded but the recorder was not operating properly. Weather overcast with light breeze, during the morning & afternoon - sunny & calm in the evening. 18 June Barrow, Alaska Specimens & insect sample worked in the morning & partially in the afternoon. A short trip was made to Beard Ridge, where 5 Snow Geese & 1 pair of Curlew Seag. were encountered - as well as a sec. dipl. O'psectors & pair of Golden Plovers. In the evening. Fullwax & I checked Dr. Stetler's beard ridge - met Stetler - spend some time checking the Curlew Seag - returned at 11:00 p.m.. Weather overcast & NW wind - heavy fog - rainstorm in the evening. 19 June Barrow, Alaska Stetler & I went to B.R. in morning - could not find Curlew Seag. - due to Storm w. wind. Holmes, R. 1962 Journal 19 June Barrow, Alaska Spent at Dr. Lab - preparing for trip to Shroavik. Weather Partly cloudy. 16-20 mph N.W. wind. 20 June Barrow, Alaska Made final preparations Friday. Hens o2 left at 1300 - arrived at Dr. Shroavik Wannigan at 1430. Set up gss & censused the plot 46 acre. 1530-1830. - weather cold, windy & foggy. Birds generally inactive. Walked North of Wannigan to Wannigan Creek & then down Dr. Lake. Wind had let down & was only blowing 5-5 mph & fog lifted & birds were more active. Nest-finding increased & it seemed that the birds (particularly phalopter & Dunlin) returned to their nest more directly & more quietly. 21 June Barrow, Alaska. All day was spent on the Shroavik plot with bird activity at a minimum - due probably To a 10-15 mph W.E. wind + occasional logs. Left the Wannigan at 1600 - went to The insect plots, took sample #3, & arrived at ARI. at 2015. Holmes, B 1962 Journal 22 June Barrow, Alaska mud observation. Dr. Reveney - Worked on Polarb's paper in Leku Sdg - with no help. Dr. Schmidt-Kornig. Whale was partly clear - but light NE breeze (~ 5 mpl) was blowing. 23 June Went to the field - B.R. at 0500 & took one recording of the Caledonian Self Song. The sun was out, sky by Ming clear - but a light wind was blowing from NE E.- making recording difficult. Late in the morning - I drove along N.S.B.9 - down into the Flats - town Elis Mayor - when I located another display Curlew Sandpiper - known now were found near Delegar - where they have first been located. Large flock of Peleas present near receiver site & in general. There was an increase in Peleas activity - more displays - more chasing. Bird activity was quite poor - hovers - the wind seems to be very depressing. The day remained clear - but the wind increased by 0800 to 10-15 mph. Holmes, R. 1962 Journal 24 June Barrow, Alaska Late afternoon - I reached De ridge to the south of the plot & the west - seen little except around burial, & Pectoral Seals, & Dunlin. The white-capped ship. was observed near the south end & the plot. Returned to the camp late in the evening. Weather remained windy & much colder. 25 June Barrow, Alaska Went to Devel Ridge & walked north ridge - to Curlee Sdg. areas - where only the 8 was seen - walked into camp. Went to The North Wohlleben area to check the Curlew Sap - which was not present - noted 1 egg or 2 - clow were noted. Saw 2 Caribou near Elson Lagoon. Holmes, R. 1962 Journal 34. 22 July Barrow, Alaska with 10-15 mph east wind. Several flock of Pectoral Seals in Footprint Lake & large groups of Phalanges at Newannagin inlet to Okpavik. The tundra is still very dry despite rain two days ago. Many of the plants are now flowering - Cephalanthus is in bloom in patches all over the tundra, but perhaps most common or densest, in Footprint Lake. Papaver is distributed in well drained areas - pygmy type, ridges & certain parts / Footprint. Also in the dry lake, the Seneca congestis is in full bloom. In the mojave polytypes - Stellaria is everywhere - as well as a number / Saxifraga - most commonly S. punctata + cornuta. Petasites fragilis is blooming everywhere & The large dark green leaves in some areas form dense mats. Potentilla - blooms in drained areas. Many of the grasses are starting to head & The tundra has been very green during the last week - due this year's growth. Several, growing soil enough to cover the dead material. Lemmings are still not seen commonly.

The number of adults insects has markedly decreased. - The tundra is still very dry & the ponds are becoming smaller & smaller. The samples are now taken in mud at the pond edge & Thelphusa chironomida are forming - large clumps! The insect - first ever Plot is decreasing - since probably most have emerged. Holmes,R 1962 Journal 37. 28 July Barrow, Alaska Weather - high pressure with light NW wind during the morning - change to dinner low fog - 10-15 mph NW wind + scattered rain + mist during afternoon evening. At The a.m. I worked on specimens - Then after lunch went out to Ookpil Sloyl & Elsin Lagoon. Found flat 1 40 ± Dunli feeling at Elsin bluffs - 800yd from Okpil - two were collected. Flat 2: 6 Black-bellied Plovers + several Bectoral Sandpipers seen in Central Marsh. Since the 0.46" rain which fell during the early morning hours Friday - 27th - there is much standing water on the tundra. Most of the depressions are now filled & small pools or puddles everywhere. Holmes,R 1962 Journal 43 8 Aug Peters Lake, Alaska Up at 6700 - had breakfast & walked to the south shores (or fans) to the south end of the lake (with R. Ashley) & up into the canyon - So. of Mt. Chamberlain. The only birds seen were in the lowland - mostly the new Unmataus, Whatears, & pipits - with a few Logland Longspurs, Snow Buntings & 1 Sparrow (untried?). Holmes, T.R. 1962 Journal 9 Aug Peters Lake, Alaska Crows in found. Pellets were collected at both meat sites. Graylins, Arctic Char. Lake trout never caught from the lake or adjacent streams during part of the day. Weather - calm - scattered clouds - occasional patches of sunshine. Raven seen at 16th hour - 2 juveniles + 1 least Seagull. 10 Aug Peters Lake, Alaska Mule deer went to south end of lake (Chamberlain Fan) + pulled in traps - saw several juvenile wheatears, pipits & snow buntings. M. murius was watched for about half an hour. These muskrats are diurnal & numerous animals were encountered as we walked over the fan & especially in the benches above the south edge of the fan. The active runway systems were noted on a few occasions. An animal was seen to sit at its burrow in front of a tunnel entrance for the loud muskrat squeak - which accounts for their common name - The singing vole. One pile of cut leaves was located under edge 1 & boulders - when pulled out with a spade - its capact volume would be about ½ gal. Most the leaves were willows - with only a few grasses. Holmes, R. 1962 Journal 15 Aug Barrow, Alaska In the morning - I went to Shnavik via Vol+ Footprint Lake. Returned on the east side of gasoline by meadows & beach ridge. Weather - Thick fog - 1/8 to 1/2 mi visibility. Footprint Lake was nearly devoid of life - except small flocks of longspurs & 3 immature plovers. Mather's love Lawn on gravel ponds near Britton's Butte Turk Lake (Pholospera, mauri, & first alpino - R. Turnstone & melanotes) - while some pholages & mountain alpines were also present at the large inland lakes (not Shnavik, however). Afternoon was spent picking insect larvae specimens. Nobles' were Specimens were collected in the evening. 16 Aug Barrow, Alaska Drive to Bead Ridge & halfway to Elson Lagoon - during the morning. Then went to Britton's Butte & Sour Salt Lagoon in the afternoon. Weather overall - muddy & windy (10-15 mph - E). Several groups of seals, birds & plovers seen - Aluminum little activity. Some vacuum used samples were cleared. Then full moon & Mullen's in the evening.

Weather overcast during the morning with 1-2 kt SSW wind; clearing in the afternoon- sunny, with little or no wind. In the evening - went to the village - returned at 2200. 26 Aug Barrow, Alaska - Gull Lake, Alaska Went to Drift plot at 850' for soil sample; returned & left worked- then all morning. Weather overcast, light sprinkles from 10-15 mph westerly wind. Left at 1430 for Gull Lake with Bill Challis & Bob Murphy (pilot)- 1 Owl seen near Wainwright - no other seen nor were any gulls seen. Arrived Gull Lake about 1735 - landed at 1800. The lake has gone down in size + depth- 30-40'. A mud gravel is now around the edge (the lake & the island). Holmes, R. 1962 Journal 34 26 Aug. Barrow, Alaska - Quillaby Blade Adults. All dead - full, sour chief were found along At shore of the island. De counting De nut sites - There appears to be about 23 active nut burial sites (±10). 14 pellets were picked up in hour + we departed after getting stuck at several sand bars at 1930.- arriving back at Barrow at 2130. The lake is drying up so much that landing - next year - may be difficult. This may have been our last trip!! 27 Aug Barrow, Alaska Finished processing sod samples by 0900. Holmes, R 1962 Feeding Observations 7 July Barrow, Alaska Records were made today on the method of feeding by the various species and how this will vary with habitat, weather & season. The accompanying data sheet shows the items recorded. The only explanation needed concerns the feeding action. If the bird picked at the surface or at the vegetation - it was recorded as pick - there are single motions - not repeated rapidly. If the bird jabbed so that the bill went and pecked sage or below (0-15cm) - then it was called a jab. This motion may be repeated rapidly 4-5 times - such sequence of jabbing was recorded as one mark. If the bird probed deeper than 10 mm - then - it was recorded as a probe - again rapid repeated sequence were recorded singly. See discussion of algae + melanotos for this date. 1 Aug Black mud near camp with water no - no food in this habitat. Holmes,R. 1962 Insect Sampling 31 may Barrow, Alaska Two samples taken from Britton's tree where a number 1 polygon are exposed. Ponds are starting to open up. 1-to m² sample taken from a pond edge - the hyp center polygon area - contained 5 Pedicia. Another sample taken 5' away on a higher polygon - no detectable insects. A gas ARDS was inhabited, the area. Both plots were granted Covered. 2 June - 2 samples taken from grass-sedge slope - One sand sod (Woblesly Flough - where 2 Diver were shot. ) contained 5 Pedicia. None seen in the other sample - taken 5' away. 5 June Perma-frost levels open slope is about 1 inch or less. 9 June Direct plots have been Covered by snow but Today snat 1 The polygotypes have become exposed ; The ponds, however, are still deep - snow - only the top (stales) are thawing. Snow in becoming quite soft. Thaw + New shower will clear soon. 8 June 3 soil sod samples taken from bluff - several Pedicia + 1 Tipula - see sample sheets. 9-13 June - Most (One day were dry) Thawing - the snow literally disappeared. Holmes, R 1963 Journal 27 may Barne, Alaska Peiper + arrived at 1015 this a.m. and were met by D. Muelle & J. Humphrys. After getter settled + having lunch, we went out to De Beard ridge - Wohlschley Sloyd & Elsa Igon The B.R. top is nearly all exposed - one clear step / tundra 30 to 100 feet wide - with patches / snow only in the deeper ditches & troughs. There was very little bird activity in this sector - only 3-4 O + 2 g Longspur + several Parnam Jayars. Along De Mabelle / Wohlschley, large areas (1/4 - 1/2 acre) were exposed - motly grassy tundra - has several Pecked Seps & 1 Baritci were located - as well as 7 Sanddrijs. Along Elsa Igon bluff - mine open funda - with the above species seen + 3 R. Turnstones, 3 Quails, 2 Semi-pal Seps, frequent Longspurs + several Parnam Jayars. Courtship activity was seen in SP & PS. Trits were heard from RBFBS & SP - In general the tundra was quiet, however - except for the occasional Longspursey. The meet-off appears to be 7-10 days ahead / schedule + is progressing rapidly. Pre-equivalent date - fir start met Will eat your woodchuck June 6-7. Lemming sign is spotty - only occasional An active runway seen on the now- explosed Tundra. The faejar activity is not very shiny today. I saw a snowy owl was noted today. 28 may Barrow, Alaska Organized lab in early morning, Ben walked out through drum area. Weather clear & sunny, many large puddles. 1 snow & up plains, streams 1 melt water were pouring into the lower areas. Saw 2 SP + 2 BS, one of the former was displaying - Gee sp. accs. Longspurs were abundant & their songs were heard frequently. Lemming sign was much better than that seen a week ago yesterday - most of the tundra now exposed hot Sign / cut - some of the entire area we moved, but in mat, caching was confined to the vicinity of the runways. Snow flurries during the last day have covered many of the upland sites, although, Bird Rock, Olson Bluff, Wellsbly Bluff (NW side), and Crest Vol. Cliff Bluff are exposed to varying degrees but all present a day continuation and 1 open tundra. Bird life: hover, so confined to Elson + Wells Bluff, mostly in the former (except Cassius). Holmes, R. 1963 Journal 5 June Barrow, Alaska Departed to Ooh-Britta area in a.m. - snow is now disappearing rapidly from the tundra - met 1 Britton's Area to be stopped - path/ the ridge between Voltr-Britta's Arc - Voltr Area & the bluff below the west side of Voltr creek. Weather was overcast, mist, 5 mph NW wind. In afternoon, I went to Eiscanbluff, North Woldersbog - snow is now melted - to a point equal to 15 July/ last year (i.e. when we were watching the Caribou Gap display). This is now a continuous strip, 1 snow-free tundra between Brant Points & Woldersbog Slope, varying in width from 50 to 150 yards. More Dunlin activity was noted today; jaigans were displaying & apparently settled. Holmes,R 1963 Journal 6 June Barrow, Alaska Pomarine Jaegers were scattered in the same areas + were showing signs of settling The snat is becoming mushy & soft & appears to be disappearing rapidly. At shift 1 wind yesterday, & The west, continued today and by late morning, there was only a very light westerly breeze. The temp pool very in the 40s to mid 50s. In afternoon, made this ascent.-Malain, I went to Beach Ridge - saw Semi-pole's displaying PS, RB, & heard 1 BS new magnets station. At south end of Beach ridge, 2 Snowy Owls were seen - the 5th was doing a dracula display. Weather remained good - m wind & warm. In afternoon - west to Elson - where snow is also needed, rapidly - Area - 10-7 b wide na - further both and where it was where we found Curlers Sep. last year. Snowy Owl Worms - not 2 (S-q) along Elson - 2 (po) - level ridge. Clear: high overcast - 5-10 mph - east wind, In evening - to Voth + Trepelene III & D Area - heavy for 2 mint prevented me from sleep much - but I did locate The 3 Buff-breasted + watched them for awhile - Several semi-pas were displaying + more flocks of 44 PS were encountered. 9 June Barrow, Alaska Beaver Ridge + ATCS - weather foggy, light NW wind. Holmes, R. 1963 Journal 9 June Barns, Aldele Afternoon - went down west side / centre marsh - which is now covered with 1-2'1 water + mud ice, crossed east end / gasoline ridge - to fertility plots. To my point, most areas were incomplete with snow or melt water. However beyond the fertility plots - up to the north shore / Otlepit Slough lay exposed open fundus even crevices. Peatlands (both first series) very common, only occasional RB were seen. Lennin sign + Representatives / few jaguar and an owl indicate a poor lenin population. A stop to the north shore of the Shad Elsa - now Steyart Write + Ru pretted + few dunks river winding scabrous. Relatively little display, activity was sustained. No flok / any shrubs spear water. Weather - overcast - calm - occasional sun. By evening, heavy fog settled in; so lab work was done at this time.

Holmes,R 1963 Journal 10 June Barrow, Alaska In morning went to insect plots + soil samples. Stopped in Borth's area to check RO nut - it had been destroyed by a vehicle. This area is entirely free (snow now) - this zone was entered all the way up - except some snow patches are present near Tropics III A & B. At insect plots - the side + poly for top are open, but the pines are still covered in. There is some standing water - Pmd C - but in none of the others. The pines at the Covead site are still snowed in. Weather this morning was clear, sunny - with a cold 10mph NW wind. - There was little bird display activity. Afternoon. Stevens Logsdon arrived on Okiin + made his crew depart - ARL. Afternoon spent getting rice + Robert safeguarding our supplies. Insect samples were picked. In evening I went to Elisa lagoon to Cobb's Bay. Ice was clear, with a strong current from the east. Bird activity was light - little displaying. No pectoral flocks.

Weather today windy (10-20 mph) - Cold - and occasional sun shown Anyway. Work in lab evening - fueled red car in ready to take Pickett & me to Airport from flight to Cape Thompson - Left at ~ 2300. - saw 3 Snowy Owls between Barrow Skull cliff - cream aircraft foggy. Arrived Thompson - 0200 - 6-13-63 - met Harry Storm, camp chief, Bill Brown, & 2 U.S. G.S. (Tailleur & Gary Anderson). - went to Red - 13 June Ogontz Creek, Cape Thompson, Alaska -left cap at 0800 - took break up side of Crowbee Mtn - to main camp - near Kp 1 ridge at 0845. We then worked north (forest) along hypsoge - where snowe height for 500-700' - above Sea level. - covering 3-4 miles during about 7-8 hours. Holmes,R. 1963 Journal 17. 13 June Oystaul Creek, Cape Thompson, Alaska Nidyl top: Horned lark, Water Pipit, Lapland snow Bunting, longspur, Baird Sandpiper (3 pair), Green Plover (4-6 pr), Knot (1 nest with incubating bird), (at least 3 spp), Raven, L-t. Jaeger, Rock Ptarmigan 78 After watching the knots for most of the day, we returned to camp a little off from, boothillend & rappel for awhile. At about 1730-2 I walked up along Oystaul Creek & along the adjoining hill-slopes. The creek had limited snow cover - up to 3' over a sculpture clump 1 grain. The hill slope are Canvasback, Eriophorum Tenuifolium. Birds seen: Wilson's Snipe (nest 1 bird with prett- 4 eggs - on edge / Eriophorum tenuifolium - in will mouse area - 40' from stream bed - and pure - strong destructive draft, seventail Sporel Tadpoles, weeping out of the scale, flapping - squabbling note), Savannah Sparrow (1 nest with 6 eggs), White-W. Holmes, 12 1963 Journal 4 July Barrow, Alaska procured several birds before going to Mullins for sugar. Snow started falling about 1630t Continued for the rest of the evening. By 2201 - there was about 2" on the ground icycles hanging all the building Steve Holland & I walked out into the drum area & checked in the birds - which were getting frantic. The buntings seemed most upset & both members of the pair came out scurrying around trying to find food - primarily for the young. A brood of semipals was found. One was being brooded by 1 adult. The adult semipals were feeding in the left mound also put mayors - but were having a difficult time with it. 5 July Barrow, Alaska Snow still covering Nygard - both in Camp 2 or the fundra. In the latter place - it covered about 87" on ground (at 1830) & probably 150% at 1700 - the melt showed four - equals: The drift varied - being 2-3" in depth - & crushed part of the drift. Three Pectens seen were motored - dued 87 - seen 42 petals some flushed for snow- circled neck (95% mud and snow) - Sent slow got stuck in sump. 30 BS net + 1 RV net (w/leap) - few level cold epps. One lypsy put flushed & containing young - not found some stock dueded (Hlidget v predet?) - Start both pelagic). It seems that birds which were still on eggs are laid off - but for such strand young - may have problem with snow melt. In the morning, I went to Beaver Ridge & The area south of not so soft lagoon - when I found an auger net with young I discovered that another brood destroyed + at least one adult shot. A fledgling redback was encountered; 2 $% were collected. No perches were noted in any direction. In the afternoon, I took soil samples at the insect plate & went thru Vok area & the high country to the south. Two perches nests were intact, one was not occupied - no $ & chin were nearby. Two more broods were encountered in the afternoon travel. One flying immature female was collected - NTE 10th area - both adults ever present. In my evening specimen rinse samples now processed. Child reported that at 0530-- the ground was nearly a solid sheet via - by 0800, some had started to melt but the ice still cruddy when working we deturdu. During the morning an icy ran fell but- by early afternoon, it warmed up, to three meters- but it kept- raining all evening. Along with this- was a storm 10-15 mph northeast wind. R T Halme 1963 Journal 36. 18 July Barrow, Alaska In the morning, went to Arctic ridge plot #1. Most of the rest here have hatched - exc. for 1 pterodactyl, 1 nodosaur & 1 iguana floor. Several unattended pterosaurs - both sort of were present. Afternoon, I went to main plots & tried prod-vacuum plan. Samples - #5 & #7. Adult mosquitoes has decreased markedly in last 4 days. Holmes 1965 Journal 37. 19 July Danny Hlosko Evening - I went to Brook ridge & collected several Baird Slop. Solves are now showing good size. 1 foil plumage. - it most is proceeding. Weather remains clear generally color. A breeze shifted to SOT (for West) during the evenings & days. Flots / cicles began moving toward the west. 20 July Barrow, Alaska Childs, Stevens, & I went to Shrooivik via AACs & gasoline sledy - 4 cheet forpline. Several pertual flots & broods seen also the way. On the plot - more pertual were observed & 3 new nests & 2 new brood were located. The subbot actroph was lost. Holmes, R. 1963 Journal 43 27 July Barrow, Alaska The almost young at this time may indicate that not so many have survived a albeit not then born Late in Dr. season have not survived while those hatched in early July are able to fly now could have moved off. Predation has presumably been heavy. Dr. P. Johnson reported two new cases yesterday- one of a P.T. Chasing a group of longspurs for a minute until the longspurs took refuge among the people within reach Else logn plant ecolog, plot. The jujigi The flew ahead and took off in another direction. The other was a young shov- eld bird chick (sp?) being taken by the jujigi in the same vicinity. Also - he reports that one golden plover young was lagging behind the rest of the flock, and the adult would keep running back and looked back to keep it moving. Finally the chick collapsed moved not more - appeared exhausted - maybe out of food-??? This worst situation for prey is evident- since not only are the chronisms inaccessible but now the heavy rains have drastically reduced the hosts.

Holmes 1963 Journal 44. 30 July BARROW, ALASKA TO INUVIK, N.W.T. CANADA. Little bird life seen because high flying altitude heavy cloud cover. Depart Barrow at 1600 + arrived Inuvik at 1930. (Then 2 hr added for Time change) Inuvik is on the west side of the delta of the Mackenzie River. This is spruce-moore country, characterized by scattered groves of Black spruce (Picea mariana) - up to 25'-30' in height. There is an understory: Betula glandulosa (2-3' height + lower), Vaccinium (like Solanum? Blueberry), Lichens, Sedges, & Various forbs. The lichen Cladonia is very common throughout the country - and is easily seen from the air. Epilobium angustifolium & Streptocarpus congestus were along the roots in bloom. Birds seen - Redpoll, Tree + White - on Spruce, Fluffy, Black aids, all in Spruce area - white Ravens, Glorious Quail (+ a dark type of quail - which may have been Short-tailed Gull - [illegible] came) were in return & along the River channel. 31 July Inuvik to Sachs Harbor, N.W.T. Canada Left Inuvik at ~ 1030 + arrived Sachs at 1400 - after a flight above the clouds; We carried the [illegible] (in village - on the flight - Fred Carpenter.

Holmes, R. 1963 Journal 31 July Soche Harbor, Bombs Island, NWT, Canada Upon arrival we were met by Mr. Eric Davison from the Division of Transport, Canadian Government who was heading a crew to build The landing strip at Soche. After dining at the construction camp, I walked several miles through the tundra to the north to meet J. De Cautrip & then down to the village. Two major tundra habitats here - Upland Situation on the ridge tips + slopes - which are characterized by small (6-12") polygons - mostly covered with soil (or mud today - due to recent rain). The dominant vegetation here is Dryas - colonist for small forbs. Lemming sign was evident - such may old burrows (runways) - but no fresh activity. In the area I would expect to find Dicentra. In lowland areas we met Mr. Luke & Mrs. Morty Lass. These are wet marshy tundra characterized by Eriophorum & Carex. The habitat type is not too common - probably occupying no more than 30%. Holme 1963 Journal 31 July Sachs Harbor, Banks Island, NWT, Canada seen - 1 with c nest 1 1/2 grown chick (my nod deer 4 according to the people at Sachs & Barmaid Land - pectors whiterup (1) were seen, as well as red phalarope & Color Plowers. The Black-bellied Plover occurred on that day near in no iplabs. And coastal bluffs along water edge - Raven & Glorious fowl were relatively common. Holmes 1963 Journal 47. 1 August. Sachs Harbor → Bernard River, Banks Island, Canada After spending the night at Sachs (became low clouds, fog, rain & 10-15 mpt westerly breeze- which has been the weather here since Dec 75th), we left this a.m. at 0800 & flew west to Cape Bellett & Pierre's Point along the coast (the country near the mouth of the Bellett River was very marshy & Euphorbia blossom were widespread - if this should be good fasciaria habitat). On the trip north - we were for most of the time but Glaciers, fields, vegetation on Sabine Gully were frequent, etc. along the coastal sandbank & lagoon. Flora / fauna: 3 to 40 birds seen from the ponds adjacent to the coast. Upon coming to the Bernard River which empties into Beaufort Sea near the NW corner of the island, we turned east & followed it for twenty miles & until we reached the camp (Mr. J. Mahon) for our assistants - Steve MacLean & Rich Tenera. The camp is located on the north bank of the river, at a point near the junction of the Bernard & "out" rivers. After settling, Doug Kaff, Del & I walked north to the foothills (Carnes) over the Eropha flaky covered terraces & meandered lanes - where a C. fasciaria had previously nested.

Holmes, 1963 Journal 48. 1 August Bernard River, Banks Island, Canada Saw in this area several singing adult Calcarius lassoni, Squatarola squatarola, & Stenonurus longicaudus. Amberly tip down in the dead hell at a Restrican bed east of camp - 1 adult sandpiling was observed. Fledgling among the ground. Afternoon, Mavor ID checked an extensive Crosbytown-Carex marsh south (McBennant Pur SSW) Camp. The area is about 4 x 3 miles + consists of marshy ground & scattered lake ponds. The only birds seen were Arenaria interpres (1 Adt + 1 flying imm.), Phalaropus fulicarius (28+3 flying immatures), Ad., Aren sylvestris, & L. spp. This area was inaccessible during snow (June & early July) & therefore not visited during air time by the crew - however by its appearance, it should be good tussilago habitat. In the evening, Maclean & I took a walk north from camp across the hills & several valleys where g8-10 Ad Birds seen included Squatarola, Chlidonias (18+1 2-3 day old chick), Calcarius, 2 Ad Barn swallows at two separate lakes, 5 Ad 16 Atlanta nigricans, an adult Tryngite subnigricollis with 2 flying immatures (cell collected), 6-8 Stenonurus longicaudus, 107 Laroques (caspian) + 38-24 Lagoopus mutus, 3 Phalaropus

Holmes, 1963 Journal 49. 1 August Bernard Riv, Banks Island, Canada We returned to camp at 0100. Weather Today has been variable - rain shown on minute, sunny warm + mosquitoes in nest. In severe Newweather was: 46-45° F, dropping to 38° during the night. HABITATS: Upland - hill tops & slopes - quite bare with snow and dry polygonal scattered Dryas tussocks. Occasionally small swales are found with Eriophorum being the most conspicuous plants. In this habitat - little is found - but occasional Black-bellied Plover & Horned Larks (Mobs). The lower hill sides start getting snow Eriophorum & Drya tussock - then mud with Eriophorum & the marshes - here with scarce green sedge etc. In lower slope - Duff-breaks Sandpiper, Sanderling, Black-bellied Plover, Longspur, Horned Lark, Rock Ptarmigan - Goldfinch Low marshes - Wet, pools, lakes - Eriophorum - not snow with Drya & hummers (larks [red line - most variety]). White-rump Sandpiper, Phalaropus, Lussem, Semipalmated Sandpiper, King Eiders. (WIM- all 3 Woods/ Kings were seen in the Areas today.

Holmes, R. Journal 50. 1 August Bernard River, Banks Island, Robertson Canada The habitat separation is crude but in general it seen to hold. The Counts varied in floral variety, but in general the vegetation is not lush, that is the planks are not too dense, except in the very wet marshes. 2 August Bernard River + northern Banks Island, Canada Wear overcast with rain showers. jaags 2 walked southeast for carp across "our" River. Mrgt the marsh area in the wedy between Our Bernard Rivers - where we saw 2 broods (1/6, 1/3 young, and accompanied by an adult 9), occasional longspurs, long-tailed juncos, glaucous gulls, some gulls. On the south side of the Bernard a small (80 acre) marsh was located - which had several pools flakes + then a sweeping hillside up St Muelen's Knot - apparently Mrs. Cox the county Raw had covered in his wallchart presumably these are the ponds where he had collected the white-rump. The habitat was the usual Carex, Eriophorum Marsh. Holmes, R. 1963 Journal 53. 2 August Bernard River to Norman Wells Banks Island, Canada Coast inland parallel to Prince of Wales Strait (could see Victoria Island) & large lake, where a few small groups of Snow Geese were noted & thence west to Thomas- River & through camp. Along At Thomas River, more Musk oxo (1 group 14 and 2y, 1 4/6 animals, + 1 or 10) were seen. The muskox would run as the plane approached but if we circled about & came nearer again, the group formed or danced ring with 2 facing outward & the cows? Colour: The centre. - These are massive animals but yet they could run quite fast. 3 August Bernard River, Bank Dr., Canada to Barrow, Alaska habitat. Other many swales - some being several square miles in area were also seen along this route, but they were inaccessible by plane. The country to the north of the Bernard which was covered yesterday was the same as described for the Mohu camp area - large hills with rather barren, sparsely vegetated tops & the wet Euphorbiaceae - grassy marshes - in valleys. It appeared that the northern area may be 70-75% upland country, and the remaining part is lower slope & marsh - while south of Bernard River, the country was about 45-50% upland - the remainder being marshy. The unknown area which would still be well considered to the headwaters country of the Bernard. We arrived at Sachs Harbor, picked up mother's mail & flew on to Kivalik. Here we ate, checked the ships & left for Barrow at 1800 (160 Barrow time) & after flying above the Brooks we arrived at Barrow at 2000.

Holmes 1963 Journal 59. 12 Aug Barrow, Alaska Mammal lab doing paperwork. In afternoon - Johnson & I went to Oolipih Slough via gazelles ridge & fertschier plots. Saw following birds - BR> Gaglai: 1 Ad RB 1 PT with 6 P chick, 1 Ad RB. So Gazelles: 2 Im PT + 1 Ad, 1 PB, 1 RB, 2 PRB, 1 RB, 2 RB, 1 Im PS. So south 1 ftut plot: 4 PRB, 3 Ad RB, 1 Ad RB. E 1 Ftut plot: 2 RB, 1 RB, 2 Im PS, 32.B Dowl, 1 S.o., 2 Ad RB (+ 1 Im?) + So cm - 1 PS-I + 1 Ad RB. Redbills were in snowdrifts & very few immatures were seen. Picked adults were absent & only a few immatures were seen, certainly less than would be expected after the nesting death last year. The tundra is extremely wet - even lowland areas have standing water or at least saturated river water. - So no matter where we move - we are working in moist ground. Weather today was partly clear in the morning but foggy - in the afternoon. Very still evening - made the day seem warm - even though the temp was - the 30's. BARROW, ALASKA Morning, Hurd & I went out to beach & gasoline ridge (1PS-D, 7TPS) + The West side insect plots (few dm 60 - no per sec) - where we looked me the Sampling Program & sites & discussed insect matters. We returned via Berta's Bar- where 2 DnAB & 2-3 Ats + RP went to the gravel area. Bird activity was incredibly low Afternoon, specimens were processed & paperwork completed. Weather Today was overcast - light wind - 35-40°F - Apparently freeze temp. (but my alt. 14 Aug BARROW, ALASKA Morning spent in lab working on data & talking with Hurd & Maker (who arrived back from Banks last night). After lunch, Hurd & I went to Desert plod, while I took soil & sand samples where Hurd did some surface check (where none were seen). It feels like area is rich - certainly more than Motel ridge. - Several Longspurs, 1GP, 5x Glaucous Gulls, + Pom Day - we seen no shrikes! Orient - rain already next wind 5-15mph - pasty.

Clothes - issue not possible to locate in the day! So will have to wait till tomorrow for before going afield. At Erickson, Alaska Dept. Fish & Game arrived with Marvin Perkins. Recent! Rain Ft. Live Zoo - after Polar Bear!! 4 June Setup new lab & hulled with Brews in the morning. 1200-1430 After lunch, walked through drum area to AACS - went to Salt Lagoon & drove to camp. Area 30% bar - mainly patchy - but swell (large area (80x58'). On NNE were found more birds, particularly Pictoreas (42;17;18) & Redbills (2-3?). Semi-pes & Birds were seen 25- 3's in the drum area; several pairs were near AACS. 2g. Pivin also near salt lagoon. 1 Snowy Owl - sitting in Pityphene near Trapline IX, + X, 1+ Shot - landed Owl near AACS. 2 Ruddy Turnsters - in drum area. Scattered - hunting Pomeine Gaugers between end/drum area & beach ridge. - Weather forecast, 10-15 mph SW wind. 1600-1830.- Drive to lower ridge - Woblesdug - Elsen Lagoon - 4 within 10 yds & 1 Colpitts. Holmes, R. 1964 Journal 5. 9 June Barrow, Alaska To warm - went to area south of Firth Lake (Brinkguk) + watched White-rumps, at least 3 to nearly 4 displaying 2PP in that area + 2 or 3 on the south side of the ridge. One pair watched + photographed. Weather cold - 20°+ - east wind - and pack from north - ice was cracked on the way out, were frozen 1½ hours later on return. 10 June 0900-1100 - Macbean & I went to Black Ridge - White-rump very abundant; several PS + BS. Weather partly overcast - cold east wind (10-20mph). 1330-1700 - weather clear, sunny, but still windy (10-15mph). White-rumped Sandgipers appear to be the most common sandgiper on the tundra - found today 20+ PS - the nearest - all along north crest ridge - between b.r. & gasoline ridge - a gasoline ridge. 1 Bard Sep. met with 4 yp near middle salt lagoon. 1930-2130. Both areas + Vom blagg. Little bird activity - 28 PS displaying east 1 cakeater- Road - 1 WR, 1 BS - several PT. Photographed PS on Piktha's plot + Then walked to north beach ridge - PS activity Good, little WR - 2 Buff-breasted Saps. a No. B.R., no 4 drums. - Weather clear - light (5-6mph) East wind. 1430-1730.- No B.R. - weather same, except wind 10-15mph. Few more buff-br. - white-rumps not very active. 15 June 0815-1130. No B.R., mostly photographing buff-breasted Saps - PS + watching WR's. Weather same as yesterday - clear - sunny - windy (8-12mph). 1430-1800. Went to gaski ridge - collected 2 pairs 1 WR - little activity - watched polygynous male P. b south - 2 Buff-br. Sev. B.R. (1male) + numerous P & PS. Weather about same; wind increase in speed. 2030-2230. Walked past / No.B.R. - with E.A.P. & Maclean - watched buff-breasts which were common. 16 June 0900-1200.- No. Baird Ridge : 1430-1500. No. ar D.P. (Helbi) Plot + North B.R.- Morning some observer buff-breast & WR - occurs PS. Weather Clear - strong (15mph) in a.m. - somewhat lower in afternoon. Tundra snow just 1snow - exact along the edge of curve near the shelter. In beach ridge + fairly-steady in some pools + polygon troughs. Fog in late evening

Buff-breast corner - 2 new WR. nests. 1430-1800 - No. 8R - little activity. weather same - light wind. - evening in lab. 18 june 0830-1200. : 1400-1800. - No. Beach Rgy. mostly east of Minnet. (White-rump sector) - WR active that area - but not very 4 bands - Buff-breast noted. Weather - overcast, loogy, misty - some sun. - light (5-10) wind. 2030-2330 - Gasoline Ridge - weather, parts clear-windy. 19 june 0830-1200 - No. 7BR. + Drum Area. 1330-1730.- Volk Area - Sweet Ridges & Gasoline Ridge. Weather overcast - 5-15 mph 'breeze'. White-rump activity declining - group 1 pectorals present. In the evening - Maclean & I went to The No. B.R. to chek a Buff-br. + WR. - Weather overcast, cold east wind (5-15mph). 22 June - 0500-0715 - No. B.R. recorded WR + PS - light north-east wind - snow on ground & falling during early period but melting rapidly by 0700. 0900-1130. No. B.R.-camp - WR activity: Notice for area + area. Peckers are flocking in increasing numbers. Weather partially clear, only a light NE wind. In the afternoon to micromet section of birch sour and 1 Pitelka's plot. - weather clear - light NE breeze. In lab in the evening. 23 June - 0830-1200. No. Beach Ridge - Weather overcast 3-10mph Northerly breeze - WR activity good - little Buff-br. activity. Shorebird displays have decreased markedly in the last 2-3 days. 1500-1730. No. Beach Ridge - drum area. Evening in lab 24 June 0930-1230. No. B.R. Bird activity decreasing markedly - some PS + WR display but no BS or RB. Holmes,R.T. 1964 Joumneel 25 June BarrowS, Alaska Maclean & I went to Harrarik Lake 0830 - 1730. - Thru Footprint (13 knots, flew 1 50-60 PS, sev. Phalaropes (1 Norman). 20 Centus plot where sev. Baff-brooks, RB, OPS - were noted but activity never low. Several more BB were seen to N.South along the same ridge - At south end Lake - 7+ ps / Slopes free nesting - sev. varying Brent - Scattered Arctic Terns. Snow Owls + Panna fayers see frequently. - Weather around - snow flurries all day long. Prolonged froze last night (over 40 large men) + Remained froze until late morning hours. Lemmy sign - was generally good - must it was De winters - little bird activity. 26 June -1000-1230 - No BR - 1500-1800. Gualin F No.Reed Ridge, Bird activity lower than prev week - Weather Current, wind 6-5 mph- N.W. In evening to Pkthel's plot - Several BB still displaying - Weather foggy, by 5 mnt - little no wits - Readied BB. 27 June 0500-0715 - No BR - Somewhere. Weather clear; no wind. 0930-1200 - No BR - Gualin Ridge 1500-1730 N.S.B.R., Weather remained clear - but left possible threat during next Day. Bird activity low.
