Holmes,R 1962 Journal 8 June Barrow, Alaska Morning spent in lab working a specimen. Sullwan arrive late in the morning, as did Gerry Stevens. Weather overcast - 10mph East Wind blowing. By afternoon - The sky was partially clear - & by evening - Peter was shining brightly (until c. 2100). The snow stayed hard during the morning & was still crunchy at 1300 - but by 1700 - everything was quite slushy, great and I snow meter Meant: At top of the beach ridge - part of Elson Lagoon Fluffs & Uth Area - exposed. 1300-1630. Drove to Elson lagoon - when sea ice floes & Peatrees were seen moving South; 2 Curled Sandpipers; 1 Golden Plover, Sev. Dunlin (no flush - snowgroup 14 [illegible] lawn), Longspur-Hunting - 2 Long-billed Dowitchers. 1930-2200. Drove to Uthbrow - watch Sev. Red-tailed - heavy fog - still see Red Phalarope - saw; Old Square. 9 June Barrow Bluffs 0500-1200. Drive to Britton's Area - old square, Pinetail, Ruddy Turnstone, 1 pr. Barn Swallow - To Insect Ridge - 1 pr. Redback - polygon-top Vegetation exposed - pines all snowed in just the tops / stokes showing. - No birds seen between Deer & Dunal's Gap - bluffs
