28 may Barrow, Alaska
Arrived at 1000 at Barrow "International"
airport. The general appearance of the
snow cover in the vicinity of ARL & Denali
was that spring is late in coming. Snow
is still covering most areas - except
for patches of ground near Volh's
Ave & near the denudation sites. Spent the
morning getting settled + straightening
up the lab. [2 Golden Plovers in Fprint 26 may. (Cade).]
In the afternoon - drove to The beach ridge,
central marsh, & gasoline ridge.
The top of these elevated areas are beginning
to clear but even here the exposed areas
are glazed with a layer of ice. Very
little sign of limming activity was noted;
1 Glaciarous Gull was seen.
After supper, drove to Volh, Denali Gate,
Denali Ridge, Arrowick & Footprint
Lake. Snow conditions in the area
are about the same as central marsh
except here are a few more open
glass covered ridge tops. Actually, the
snow does not seem to be very deep +
several warm days cover cause
quite a change. Birds: A. Longspurs; Snow
Bunting - 15t; Wheatear - 2; Sandhill Crane
- mostly near shore
3; Glaciarous Gull - 40t; 2 Snow Owls.
