Holmes, R 1463 Journal 29 may Barrow, Alaska Pepper went to beach ridge - Cooled slightly 5 mi N Cape Nome, took pit + south for about mile. On b.r. - only 1 PS was noted. On the bluff, numerous jaegers, 1-7 PS, 2 RB, 1 BS, 4 YRT, 1 S. owe. Activity was light - only a few PS displays were seen and/or heard. Terminus activity over spotty - Several animals seen. Afternoon spent in lab working on specimen + preparing insect-sampling data sheet. Cadet Ernest Willoughby, arrived in late morning. In evening, Willoughby + I went to B.R. - Webb- Elson. Saw 1♂+ 1♀ Snowy Owl near Elson, 4-8 PS, 1-2 PS, 2 YRT, 2 BS, numerous pm. jaegers, longspurs + buntings. Weak pathrider swam in a.m., overcast + cool in afternoon - with 10 mph E wind + snow flurries in the evening. 30 may Barrow, Alaska Morning in lab working on specimen + talking with Cade. After lunch, Muller, Cade, Willoughby + I went to Umnak, near Amat Brookridge. 2 owls in Umnak + 1 near Bear Meadow at Negasilie, numerous jaegers. 1 RB, 350, 1 BS, 1-7 PS - seen near Umnak area. Weak overcast but bright - wind cold 10-12 mph from the NE.
