3 August Bernard River, Bank Dr., Canada to Barrow, Alaska habitat. Other many swales - some being several square miles in area were also seen along this route, but they were inaccessible by plane. The country to the north of the Bernard which was covered yesterday was the same as described for the Mohu camp area - large hills with rather barren, sparsely vegetated tops & the wet Euphorbiaceae - grassy marshes - in valleys. It appeared that the northern area may be 70-75% upland country, and the remaining part is lower slope & marsh - while south of Bernard River, the country was about 45-50% upland - the remainder being marshy. The unknown area which would still be well considered to the headwaters country of the Bernard. We arrived at Sachs Harbor, picked up mother's mail & flew on to Kivalik. Here we ate, checked the ships & left for Barrow at 1800 (160 Barrow time) & after flying above the Brooks we arrived at Barrow at 2000.
