Holmes, R 1962 Feeding Observations 7 July Barrow, Alaska Records were made today on the method of feeding by the various species and how this will vary with habitat, weather & season. The accompanying data sheet shows the items recorded. The only explanation needed concerns the feeding action. If the bird picked at the surface or at the vegetation - it was recorded as pick - there are single motions - not repeated rapidly. If the bird jabbed so that the bill went and pecked sage or below (0-15cm) - then it was called a jab. This motion may be repeated rapidly 4-5 times - such sequence of jabbing was recorded as one mark. If the bird probed deeper than 10 mm - then - it was recorded as a probe - again rapid repeated sequence were recorded singly. See discussion of algae + melanotos for this date. 1 Aug Black mud near camp with water no - no food in this habitat. Rain has increased water in the low areas so that this black mud habitat is no longer available. Mud feeding seems to be on the edge around low-centre polygons - the
