Holmes,R, 1962 Journal 23 July Barrow, Alaska Worked on specimens & finished insect Sample #10. In the afternoon, I went to The insect plots & took more samples. The number of adults insects has markedly decreased. - The tundra is still very dry & the ponds are becoming smaller & smaller. The samples are now taken in mud at the pond edge & Thelphusa chironomida are forming - large clumps! The insect - first ever Plot is decreasing - since probably most have emerged. As yet - the eggs laid this season have not produced observable young. In the evening, specimens & insect samples were processed. Weather was clear - but < strong (5-15 mph) east wind was blowing. Muller & Hans settling for the dinner. 24 July Barrow, Alaska Worked in the lab on insect sample all morning. Mark left via Ulian at 1100. In the afternoon - went near-bowl hunt in No. von - Von group area - found an a flock of 6. Small floating Pectorals including some for are also present in the area. Weather overcast but calm in the morning - low fog & dark clouds with 10-20 mph NW wind in the p.m.
