1925 In W. Kansas - near Oklahoma line, heard a W. Meadowlark as the train was passing at 60 m.p.h. - near Newton, Kas. My recollection of it was of one great level plain with very few towns - Now it is a wonderfully prosperous looking productive country with every inch under cultivation and abundant crops - Mourning Doves were the most abun- dant birds seen. New Mexico I began seeing Night Hawks and near Fort Sumner and yes they were perched on the fence posts near the R.R. (there was nothing growing on which they could rest) and I counted those I could see on one side of the tracks. The number ran up over two hundred but my exact record was lost. Sometimes three out of five fence posts would be occupied. Occasionally one sat on the wire lengthwise - Mourning Doves were very abundant all along the line. Strained in the afternoons and cooled the air. Night cool- meadow larks and 2 large doves. June 23. Had breakfast at Needles. Indians were at the Station selling baskets and baskets. Reached Los Angeles about 6 p.m. - right on time. A woman on the train told me she was brought up in Trinidad.

1926 Lakeside is totally different from Cico - A sandy plain is sparsely covered with small yellow Bines and Danmaracks - There is almost no undergrowth, In a wet year there is probably more grass but this year it is very dry. Birds are very scarce. Aug 2-5 Beautiful weather - clear first two days; then slightly cloudy but no thunder or rain. Varied the days by driving to Glenbrook and Fallen Leaf Lake. The drive to Glenbrook is very beautiful, much of it near the shore; in our place immediately under Cave Rock on a causeway part of the time. Reminded me of the drive from Megara to Corinth in Greece. Fallen Leaf Lake is as beautiful as ever, but being built up with cottages in very cramped quarters. It is delightful to look at but hardly practicable because of the lack of level space. The Lodge is crowded with people - Very little room for bathing but boating must be fine. On Thursday Mr. and Mrs. Adams loaned us their boat and we went rowing at Lakeside. Aug 6 Left Lakeside to drive home via Placerville - a cool, cloudy day. Took nearly two hrs. to go up to the Summit - Many cottages there, and a little store which stands on the edge overlooking the Valley from an altitude of 7600 ft. Many cars going in both directions - Went over to Echo Lake then started down the American River Canyon. Many cottages and camps. Lunched at Slippery Ford on the great flat rocks which hem in the river and rested there an hour or more. Then drove on slowly, regretful at leaving all the beauty.
