Jan. 1. Rain - Many birds come to feed and bathe - Counted three
Spotted Towhees, 2 Jays, 2 G-C. Sparrows - all shaking water
from their feathers or in the bath. Hermit Thrush singing and W. Warbling.
Jan. 2. Counted 3 Song Sparrows, 1 Fox Sp., 2 G-C. Sp., 2 Spotted Towhee,
1 Brown Towhee, 2 Jays, and large flock of quail on feeding ground
at 9 a.m. Hermit Thrush singing. Drove to San Francisco by way
of Golden Gate Ferry to Cliff House and on to Rockaway Beach.
In bay were many Western Grebes (20+), Scoters, White-winged (30-40),
a few Eared Grebes, Wt. Calif., Ringbilled, Horned and Glaucous-wr. Gulls,
2 Loons, 2 Cormorants. At Friequits Lagoon, Puddy Ducks, Lesser-Scaup
and a few Mallards, Coots and Gulls and Black Phoebe. Along shore
only gulls and 1 Eared Grebe in a pond. Clearing.
Jan. 4. Warmer - Thick fog part of day. Titmouse and Song Sparrow singing
Jan. 5. Drove to Boulder Creek - Thick fog very heavy as far as Skyland.
None in Geyante Canyon or Boulder Creek Canyon. Planted Mary Wallace
rose bush given James by Mrs. Paine. Pruned Fruit trees. Drove to
Santa Cruz in evening - full moon - Canyon & ocean beautiful -
Jan. 6. Pulled boat up on bank. Many flocks of juncos, siskins,
Chickadees. Found also Flicker, Black Phoebe, Brown & Spotted
Towhee, Song Sparrows, Audubon Warbler, Humbleto, Blue Birds, Her-
mits Thrushes. Warm - Clear after 9 a.m. light fog early
