Jan.10. Titmouse spent most of the morning near nesting box giving all its spring calls. Saw it come out of the box once. Jan.11. Fine weather for this season - light tale fog in morning - 85o in L. A. Jan.12. Titmouse, Song Sp., Vesper Thorn & Hermit Thrush singing. Tale fog. '13- Rain. Jan.14- Took Prof. and Mrs. Whiles (Sather Boy from Princeton) for drive - Found they were both interested in birds. Drove to Mt. Diablo Country Club then to Martinez & along bay shore home. Saw several Sp.Navis, 1 Red-tail, Quail Cal Jay, Flickers, Cal. Woodpecker, Titmouse, R-c/linglet, Shrike, Blackbird (very no fresh-flowered land. Grain coming up - Cloudy - Clearing. Jan.15. Perfectly clear. Cold - Bright N. wind - heavy frost. James and I walked up hill - Titus road to head of Dwight way - Very few birds - A few hawks- Violets, 1 Anna Hummer - several Rufous-crs. Sparrows - Heard 1 Quail catcher, Walked over pavement on upper Panoramic Way for first time - In one shady not place there was ice and ground was frozen. On sunny side of hill, protected from wind we lay down - felt warm by the sun. Jan.16-20 - Cold, clear, growing gradually warmer. Hermit Thrush sings occasion- ally - Blue thrasher heard in distance - Titmouse sings every day for some time. Quail various. Jan.20 Went to take Merritt with Mrs. Learous, Mead, Beale, Wadsworth. Stopped at Em- bacadero about 10 a.m. Many ducks there, mostly Pintails, Baldpats, Canvas- bucks. Walked along S. side - a few Ruddy-ducks, many Blue-bills, also many Eared Grebes, 4 Pied-billed Grebe, 3 or four Western Grebes, Many Coots. Lunched at Willos then went to main feeding ground. Added there 7 Snowy Geese, 1 White-
