fronts Goose, a few Shovellers, Mallards and 2 European Widgeon (head cinnamon,
cream in center) - 1 Beldi Pate had sides of head white- 1 foreign duck - black
with red near eyes or bill & white on wing - short legs- Clear, warmer.
2 White Swans and 1 White Pelican (1 wing clipped.)
Jan. 27 - Feb. 2 - Cloudy, showers, mild:
Jan. 28. Dr. Grinnell brought
his class to watch birds from my window - 27 students. They saw
Thirteen
twelve species, most of which came onto the table: Song Sparrow, Fox Sp.
Br. Towhee, Spotted Towhee, Quail, Petronze, Men-tit on Table. Visible in
trees, Flicker, Bach-tit, Vegor's War. Hermit Thrush, Cal. Jay - R-C Kinglet
Feb. 2, 3, 4. Heavy rain.
Feb. 5. Clear morning. Drove to Martinez. Gathered pussy willows. Many
opening into tassels. Some wild currant in bloom. Hazel catkins out.

Feb. 6. Clear, warm in sunshine - Many birds singing: Meadow Lark,
Thrasher, Song Sp., Vegor's War. Petronze. Mr. Mead reported Humming singing.
Feb. 6 - Feb 14. Clear, warm.
Feb. 11. Dr. G. reported Allen Humming bird.
Feb. 7. Sharp-shinned Hawk flew against dining room window
when striking at quail on feeding table. Fell to porch floor
where its head was caught under the railing. A cat was
just ready to pounce on it when I finished it with a
broom stick. Took it to museum.
Feb. 15. Light N. wind, colder.
Feb. 16 - 7. Mild. Colder.
Feb. 17- Warmer. Allen Hummer came up to dining room window. Plum tree in
full bloom. Hali cat kills Hermit Thrush in pool. 15 min. later another thrush came
