Feb. 21. Lutescent Warbler singing in oaks in early morning - Purple Finch
singing, first time I have heard it this year. Thrasher singing nearby.
Warm - Cloudy.
Feb. 28. Lutescent Warbler in shrubs near pool. B-C Knight singing.
Feb. 29. Lutescent Warbler singing frequently. Showers. Warm. Apricot
trees, hyacinths & daffodils in full bloom.
Mar. 1. South wind - Lutescent Warbler singing.
Mar. 7, 8. rain - Purple Finch Singing.
Mar. 9. Clearer. Took pictures of pair of titmice on table.
Mar. 10. Titmouse called 108 times in five minutes 6:30 - 6:35 a.m. Most of the time
the call was a "chick-a-dee-chuck" repeated uniformly in a discouraged
tone. Began calling about 6 a.m. Soon after 6:35 it changed to a happier
chick-a-dee-dee and then stopped. Dr. G. reported Anna N. feeding young-
Mar. 12. Looked into titmouse box - no eggs visible - much fluff (rabbits fur)
in loose form.
Cloudy. Hwn Thrasher, Titmouse Song &b. Flicker. Lutescent Warbler singing calling
Heard Winter Wren at top of hill.
Mar. 13. Warm. Quail in flock feeding on table still. Hermit Thrush singing. Pair titmice
on table - Carey seeks to tree where they hide them in clefts in bark or
crack them and eat them. Today we cracked a seed holding it between
fingers on edge of table; the other cracked one on a perch I fastened to
table. Bush tits building. Lutescent Warbler singing constantly as if
female were sitting. Looked into titmouse box - nest formed but no
egg. Several times in morning saw female carry fluff out of box;
one large piece was left on a branch twenty feet from box.
Warm, beautiful day - Air sweet and clear.
