Beside the road was a Standard Oil pipe, from Bakersfield, which had sprung a leak in a number of places. The water near by was covered with oil and a number of birds had become saturated - also a Jack Rabbit which was nothing but skin and bones - We returned to the hotel where we changed our clothes then had lunch together under a big tree beside a stream where Flickers were added to our list - After lunch each machine took its own way home. We came up the valley through Newman, Gustine, to Tracy, Byron, Wash Creek road to Concord, via Martinez (Tunnel road closed) reaching home about 10 p.m. Saw a mocking bird Mr. Newman. Total list - 64 sp. Berkely, May 17. Busy in garden - Two pairs of quail came for seed. May 18- Hair cut - May 19 - Started early to Mrs. Seymours ranch in the Sierras- Via Martinez, Stockton, Lodi, Valley Springs - San Andreas, Wrotehumme Hill, Glenrose Road. Lunch at Stockton - Not hot. At San Andreas stopped half an hour for oil & puncture repair Drolled out where I found good feeding - W. Blue-eyes came very near - very blue - top of head blue, black band on forehead. Bluebirds, Thrushes, Goldfinches, Linnets - A Brewer Black- bird gave a call next to me - Lord, clean Tree-tree - Reached ranch about 7 p.m.
