1927 Wrentits, Slenderbilled Nuthatches and W. Bluebirds. A robin was seen at Orinda and Cormorants on the reservoir at San Pablo dam. 41 species. Yellow warblers were seen in Berkeley but no grosbeaks. Apr. 20. juneos back of S.K. Theater Warm spring day. W. Gnatcatchers rang in our gaily. Have not heard them singing since Vallis's days. Heard B.C. Knight. Found Allen Hummers nest in oak on fence backs J & K. Theater stage. Apr. 21. Found Lutescent Warblers nest contains 5 eggs. Mother bird did not fly until I parted the leaves which hide the nest, thin flew to the path and pretended to be lame. Warm. Tolmie Warbler is singing constantly from above the road - Has perhaps eventually been driven in this direction by the building of the Strong's house at the end of the road. Fox Sparrow still here. House Wren singing at Mrs Pain's house on Panoramic way - First time I have been absolutely sure of it in Berkeley. Grosbeak singing at sunset - first time I have heard it in Berkeley this year Apr. 22. Hermit Thrush gave chuck-chuck call and also plaintive note. Have not seen Fox Sparrow today. Apr. 23. Hermit thrush singing near house about 7:30 a.m. Beautiful day. Went to S.F. in afternoon - thousands of shore birds, esp sandpipers. Gulls few, mostly western. And Assoc. banquet in evening.
