1925 Los Angeles
Nov. 17. Got a telegram from Los Angeles saying Mother not expected to live.
Took night train (Padre) to L.A.. Found her very low but
she improved slowly till about Nov. 30 when she gradually
grew worse and died Dec. 6 - Sunday - at sunset. On
Nov. 27 Alice came down with Tonsilitis. Spent my
time with housekeeping and nursing Alice during day and
assisting night nurse with mother.
Principal birds noticed about the house were Gulls
flying over; Butcher Birds which [illegible] on the Telephone poles
and called and sang; Mocking Birds about the garden often
singing. Black Phoebe's calling frequently; Audubon Warblers
on wires; Near Adams St. in a large garden were many
doves with white tipped wedge-shaped tails - Mourning
Doves or some exotic species? - When we drove to Pomona
on the day of the funeral I noticed many gulls in a
puddle near Alhambra, some Crows in flight and
at the Cemetery in Pomona there were Robins calling.
Weather was warm and dry except for one foggy
night about Nov. 25, a two days rain or few days
earlier. Nights crisp and cool.
Dec. 10 Returned on the Owl.
Dec. 11 Reached Berkeley 8 a.m. after a very quiet comfortable
trip. Cold, threatening rain.
Dec. 12 Mail still came for seeds - One black cat about. Very tired.
