It was a most interesting ride through country I had not
been for 28 yrs. (spring of 1897) - before oil had been discovered
or much of the land cleared. In Brea Canyon Red-tailed
Hawks were attending screaming young Buzzards, Crows,
Black Phoebe, Woodpeckers (Nutall), Mourning Doves, Arkansas
Thighbird, Ash-throated Flycatcher, Wood Pewee, Phainopepla,
Blue Grosbeaks (in full color), Linnets, Laydi Bunting,
Vesper Sparrow, House Sparrow, Anna Hummingbirds, Yellow Warbler
and Mockingbirds were seen. I could probably have identified
more species but had not taken my binoculars to Claremont
since I expect to stay only a few hours and return by
train. Lunched in park at Whittier. Could recognize nothing of the old home except
Whittier College and the school house where I taught in 1896-97.
July 11. Drove in the afternoon with Fred, Frank and Fern to Camp
Baldy - first visit since we camped in San Antonio
Canyon in 1894. Very comfortable at Christie's Camp where
I slept outside in the couch hammock. I woke at
five and watched the Jays, Chipmunks and Grosbeaks mak-
ing themselves at home about the camp, then got up
and walked up Bear Creek past the last cottage
up over the hill and on toward Bear Flat - a
cool beautiful walk. Birds seen were:
Band-tailed Pigeon - 2 in upper part of Bear Canyon
Screech Owl heard in night.
Woodpecker - called often and glimpsed - Harris or Calavis?
