ful views along the ridge - Very steep grade down to Saratoga.
Birds seen or heard: One medium sized hawk (Cooper?), Flicker,
Calif. Jay, Black Phoebe, Willow Woodpecker, Water Hazel, Robin,
W. Bluebird, Golden-crowned Sparrow, Purple Finch, Linnets, Brown
Towhee, Vireo (Hutton?), Chickadee, Junco, Creeper.
Jan. 2. Spent an hour (9-10 a.m.) walking about in Saratoga -
Birds very abundant. Saw many Golden-crow Sparrows. Lut. Sp.,
Linnets, Purple Finches; Bush tito,
a few Song Sparrows, Goldfinches.
Princ Sisters, Audubon Warblers, Plain Titmouse, Ruby-crowned
Knights. Brown Towhees. Spurred Towhees; Saw half a dozen Calif.
Woodpecker on trolley posts which were filled with acorns
and one or two also had nesting holes, heard several Flickers
and Willow Woodpeckers, also a Thrasher. Saw several
California Jays and two Anna Hummingbirds. One close
flock of birds may have been Cedar Waxwings. Called on
Mr. and Mrs. Higginbottom who has all kinds of food
trays and nesting boxes on the premises - They reported
that many of the orchardists shoot the birds - Bluebirds
roost in their boxes. Both Titmouse and Chickadees
are common. On way back to Berkeley saw
large flocks of Blackbirds, one Sparrow Hawk and many
Shrikes. A heavy tule fog in the Santa Clara Valley reached
to Saratoga. Saw Marsh Hawks, Pt. Blue Heron.
