Jan. 5 and 6 - Dense tule fog in morning.
Jan. 9, 10 - Heavy frosts - warmer in middle of day.
Jan. 14 - Rain at last - Still cold.
Jan. 15 - No rain and a bit warmer. Two thrashers held a
Singfest about noon - Phrases connected by trilling notes.
Jan. 17. Rained much of the night and part of day. Quite a bit
warmer,
Jan. 18. Flock of 30 robins flew over.
Jan. 19. Clear - North wind - Cold. Heavy frost.
Jan. 20. " warmer.
Jan. 22. Mrs. Hoffmann, of Carpenteria came at 8:45 a.m. to watch
the birds. Called in afternoon and read me part of his manuscript of
a book on western birds - Very interesting and clear (Operation avise)
Jan. 23. Heavy fog. Dr. Grinnell brought his class at 8:20 to watch
birds. Dewal came well. Others birds were shy but
most varieties were seen - The Hermit Thrush with band
also another S.F. Spotted Towhee which kept pulling at his
band as if newly acquired.
Feb. 24. Fox Sparrow came to table for food - I watched the
quail from upstairs window when James fed them. As soon as he
closes the door they began to advance - one male in advance, the
others pecking each other more or less - The one male stood still
at the edge of the lot - others remaining just as far behind or getting
pecked if they did not. While they waited a thrasher and a jay came
