Colorado. A young Indian boy once acted as their guide, tak- ing them up into the mountains where the Penitentes went on Good Friday (she thought) to celebrate their rites. They camouflaged a tumble down cabin with brush as the Indians would not know they were being watched and stayed there three days. The men were bare to the waist and each one had two switches with which they beat themselves ("themselves", she said), holding one in each hand and reaching across the opposite shoulders so the strokes formed a bloody cross on their backs. Those who survived had their sins forgiven but those who died, died unforgiven. They were made to carry a heavy wooden cross and she was told they were buried nailed to this cross. The women crept through sharp stones on bare knees till they were covered with blood. June 24. Los Angeles - Cool at last.
