July 11 Sunday - Led the Audubon Association walk thro' the lower Campus - 9:30 a.m - 1 p.m. - from Center St. bridge to Stadium, crossing from bridge northward past Naviland Hall, to Woolsey Creek where we could look across the creek to the gardens near the President's house. Thence via Astronomy hill, crossing botanical gardens which are being moved into Strawberry Canyon; past N. & South Hall to Faculty Glade; thence to N. side of Greek Theater and above where we ate lunch just above the last eucalyptus trees. Tried to keep count of the birds: 1 Calif. Druil near Gk. Theater; 2 Willow Wood Pickers; 1 Red-shafted Flicker, 4+ Anna Hummingbirds, 2 Allen Hummupsids, 10 Western Flycatchers, 4 Coast Jays. 11 Calif. Jays, 30+ Brewer's Blackbirds. 4 Purple Finches (a fairly group), 22+ Linnets, 5 Green-backed Goldfinches. 1 Pine Siskin, 2+ Eng. Sparrows - nesting under tiles on main buildings; 8 Nuttall Sparrows, all in shrubbery near main buildings, 11 Pt. Cruz Juncos, 1 Rufous Crowned Sparrow - on hillside above Gk. Theater; 4 Santa Cruz Song Sparrows w. young hidden in shrubbery; 9 Spotted Towhees sits; 14 Brown Thrushes, 8 Grosbeaks, part birds of yr., 5 Warbling Vireos, 4 Lutescent Warblers, 4 Plain Titmouses, 10 Bush-tits (one small flock), 8 Wrentito, 4 Russel-backed Thrushes, 19 Western Robins - some spotted. Twenty-eight species. One bird kept calling at the lunch place, sounded like the Ash- throated Flycatcher. Could not see it. Beautiful weather.
