July 16 - Fire at 6:30 p.m. in Strawberry Canyon.
July 17. Took walk with Miss Brewsterick from house, through Sunny Gulch, then across hill back of Institution for Deaf Dumb; looking especially for Rufous Crowned Sparrows which we found in abundance. Also Olive-sided Flycatchers of which we found one in Eucalyptus trees back of inst. Weather hot for several days - Lizard Bunting's
July 18. Found Brown Tordikes nest in top of oak tree 20-25 ft. above ground. Feeding young birds. Small family of 1/2 grown quail came. A cat is raising six kittens in brush + 1 black cat 1yr. old makes & felines to beware of. No wonder these young birds have been few.
July 19. Beautiful weather till July 22 when we had a chilly foggy day.
July 24 - Many young quail came for water.
July 29 - A snatch of song from Juvenile Warbler. Many robins.
July 30. Half grown quail came on to the table. Also a family of very tiny ones under the table on the ground. Very warm.
July 31 Left at 5 p.m. for Lake Tahoe. Drove by way of Antioch and the new bridge to Sacraments where we spent the night -
Aug 1st Left Sacraments at 7:30 a.m. driving by way of Antioch and Colfax to Cased which we reached about 3 p.m. Stayed at the hotel up under the snow sheds where we had excellent meals and a treat to ourselves - We spent much of the afternoon at the river (Yuba) where birds were very plentiful. Indeed they were exceedingly abundant.
