everywhere. Chokecherries were ripe and grew in great clumps on the edge of the terrace occupied by the hotel. Many of the trees, Alders, cottonwoods, and even larches and red firs were covered with aphids. Evening firebeats were very abundant, flying from tree to tree in family groups. They seemed to be feeding on the cones of the firs and on choke cherries - Warblers and Flycatchers were darting out from the trees. Many of the warblers were young and difficult to identify - Mt. Bluebirds were everywhere. I slept on the porch in front of the tent where I could watch the birds in the early morning. See list on next page but one. Aug 2. Wakes at dawn. Innumerable birds about. Walked down to the river by a trail which led through brush and past a pool. Saw many Mt. David there - spent morning near the river. In afternoon we took the car and drove up the river toward Summit. Found as much traffic (Sunday) that we did not go far. At sunset Nightherbs came very near the hotel, harrying for insects. Aug 3. Left Cisco about 8 a.m. and drove to Summit, Truckee and along the Truckee river to Lake Tahoe. Parts of the last stretch of road was under construction and very difficult. Had lunch at Homewood - very bad. Drove on around Emerald Bay and on to Tallac and Lakeside - a wonderful drive. Views of the lake and mts - were glorious. The weather clear and warm; Reached Lakeside about 4 p.m. Got a cabin at the hotel and arranged to get our dinners there.
