Jamie and I drove by Golden- Gate Ferry to S.F. and Cliff House where we met Mrs. Lauderback of Los Angeles. From the Cliff House platform we watched the birds on the Seal Rocks. On the highest rock there were about 100 Brown Pelicans perched - Also a few gulls, Cormorants, Farallones, and Pigeon Guillemots. On the nearest rock (lower) were about 6 Black Turnstones. Much of the time they were very quiet but later ran about on the rock apparently feeding. The light was excellent. When the birds were quiet we could only see the dark backs, and chests, and white bellies. In flight the white rump and tail coverts with black band between and shining white sides showed beautifully. On examining the lower rock connected by cement work with the mainland I descried more Black Turnstones and 1 Puddy Turnstone. All the markings were perfectly distinct in the bright sunshine. As the ide began to drop this bird came on the bit of sand beach between the rock and the Cliff House where we could see it perfectly. This was my first identification of a Ruddy Turnstone. W-Berbon bay.
