Dec. 27. Got up at daylight for a walk along the shore. Very beautiful,
with breakers dashing up over the rocks. Saw one shore bird-
probably a Wandering Tattler. Many Western Gulls, one Lanne
Heermann Gull. At the caves the cliffs were covered with
Cormorants (Phalacrocorax). Land birds - Pipits, Gambel Sparrow, Black
Chickadee, Audubon Warbler. Birds not abundant. Left for San
Diego about 10 a.m. Drove through Balboa Park, then on
through the mountains East of San Diego to El Centro. Burned
our brakes on the Mt. Spring's grade. Reached El Centro about
6 p.m. - after dark. Lunched at Alpine Farm where saw quail (Callipepla).
Gambel sp., Jays, Audubon Warbler.
Dec. 28. Started at 7 a.m., breakfast at Brawley. Many Morning
Doves flew up from the road. Shrikes, Sparrow Hawks also
seen. On dry desert several small flocks of Horned Larks
were seen. At Oasis we stopped 20 minutes. Saw Say Phoebe,
Gambel Sparrows, and Audubon Warbler and Linnet. Lunched
at Palm Springs then drove over to Palm Canyon. Cool in the
shade but warm in the sunshine - probably 75°. A large
flock of Western Bluebirds flew into the canyon, alighting in
the palms; then circled above the hills and disappeared over
the walls of the canyon. After a few minutes they returned,
a flock of more than a hundred birds. Saw also Audubon
Warblers, a brilliant Linnet which perched on the peak at
the east end of the terrace, and a Black Chachalaca. Heard
one or two news notes but could not see the birds.
