Weather very warm. Oaks in new foliage. Wild currant almost gone. Hound's Tongue & buttercups and a few poppies in bloom.
Mar. 13. Drove to Marin Co. via San Rafael Ferry, San Anselmo, Ross. Fair for and return. Beautiful warm day -
Mar. 14. Still very warm - worked in garden in morning.
Saw a Song Sparrow and a Plain Titmouse, both
perched on a branch of spiraea between the pool
and the feeding table. They were facing each
other, about 3 ft. apart. The Song Sparrow absolutely motionless
with his eyes fixed on the Titmouse - The Titmouse
was going through a rhythmical motion, moving
his head and neck (from the shoulders) from side
to side as far as possible. The rest of the body
was fixed. This continued several minutes; finally
the Song Sparrow relaxed but the Titmouse continued
the rhythmical motion six to eight times afterward.
March 15. Fog in early morning, then clear, fresh and spring-
like. A Willow Woodpecker came into the oak E. of
house, calling loudly. After a few minutes he
was attacked by a Titmouse, chased around to
the west of the house but returned to the deciduous
oak on the east. Intermediate Sparrows about.
