Sept. 22, 23. Warm. Wind still from west. Tanagers still here. Audubon Warbler heard. Sept. 24. Not east wind. Heard Fox Sparrows at dawn. Later heard Bicolored Warbler call. Sept. 25. Warm with fog in the evening. A flock of Golden- crowned Kinglets were feeding in the oaks most of this morning. Looked at them through the binoculars to make sure I was not mistaken. A Fox Sparrow came to the pool at 6:15- almost dark. Sept. 26. Four or five Fox Sparrows came to the pool together in the morning. One of them got a band on the right foot. Gave several warblers, heard Bicolored call, and Hermit call. Thrush. Have never known winter birds to come in with such a rush. Snow was reported in Canada a day or two ago and a temperature of 6°- with gain still uncut. Warm in middle of day. Fog at night. Drove over to Lake Merritt, reaching there about 10:20 a.m. A number of Pintails, Baldpates and Mallards were feeding in and near the pen. Also some Geese (White and Nutchins?). Near the swamplands was a flock of 160 Puddies and one Canvas Back. Also, 1 Pied-billed Grebe and 2 Eared Grebes. 1 Loon was oil-coated.
