Sept. 22, 23. Warm. Wind still from west. Tanagers still here. Audubon Warbler
heard.
Sept. 24. Not east wind. Heard Fox Sparrows at dawn. Later heard Bicolored
Warbler call.
Sept. 25. Warm with fog in the evening. A flock of Golden-
crowned Kinglets were feeding in the oaks most of this
morning. Looked at them through the binoculars to make
sure I was not mistaken. A Fox Sparrow came to the pool
at 6:15- almost dark.
Sept. 26. Four or five Fox Sparrows came to the pool together in
the morning. One of them got a band on the right foot.
Gave several warblers, heard Bicolored call, and Hermit
call.
Thrush. Have never known winter birds to come in
with such a rush. Snow was reported in Canada
a day or two ago and a temperature of 6°- with
gain still uncut. Warm in middle of day. Fog
at night.
Drove over to Lake Merritt, reaching
there about 10:20 a.m. A number of Pintails, Baldpates
and Mallards were feeding in and near the pen. Also
some Geese (White and Nutchins?). Near the swamplands
was a flock of 160 Puddies and one Canvas Back.
Also, 1 Pied-billed Grebe and 2 Eared Grebes. 1 Loon was
oil-coated.
