Mar. 18. Clear again.
Mar. 19. Clear and warmer. Kinglets singing.
Mar. 20. Clear and warm. Drove to Daly City to see the new Carquinez bridge, the last span of which was lifted into place yesterday. Drove on to Benicia and Martinez, Pacheco,
Walnut Creek and home by Tunnel Road.
Mar. 21. A warm spring day.
Mar. 22. 2nd Bird Walk in Claremont Hotel grounds and canyon.
Usual permanent residents. Summer visitors:
Antlered Warblers, W. Flycatcher and
Warbling Vireo & No robins or Varied Robins or Fox Sparrow. Y-C Sparrow,
and others.
Townsend Warblers (singing), Jameson's Juno. Bushtits were building a nest.
Purple Finch was singing. Heard a Western Winter Wren -
P.M. Drove to Boulder Creek, taking Mrs. Read and Mrs.
Those with us - Reached Brookdale about 5:15 - walked to Redwood Rest along R.R. Very quiet - few birds. Warm, beautiful day -
Mar. 23. Got up 6:45, went down to river to watch for water ouzel -
Did not find him then or during rest of morning though we spent most of the time by the river. After lunch drove
to Santa Cruz, then home via Los Gatos highway. 7:10 in shade
at Redwood Rest. Birds found: 3 Large Hawks (Redtails?), 1 Buzzard,
Willow Woodpecker, Cal. Woodpecker (heard once) 2 Wallars (white breast, perched
in top of high pine on top of hill); 4 Black Phoebes, W. Flycatcher (many heard),
Steller Jay, Cal. Jay, Redwing & Brewer's Blackbird (Santa Clara valley).
