July 26. Spent afternoon on the Yuba River above Sierra City and just below a fall which falls over the bank above the road. The water is carried by conduit under the road into the river. A water ouzel crossed the road from river to fall several times. Birds were very scarce. A mulberry tree near hotel with ripe berries attracted only robins and purple finches. Saw or heard: Blue-fronted Jay, Pac. Night Hawk, Mt. Quail (crossed road trailing/singing), Water Ouzel, Warbling Vireo, Song Sparrow, Purple Finch, Grosbeak and Robin.
July 27. Drove to Gold Lake Lodge. As soon as we reached the summit birds became numerous. Saw flickers, Chickadees, Red-breasted Nuthatches, Wood Peckers, Pine Siskins, Junco's, Chipping Sparrows, Olive-sided Flycatcher, Calaveras Warblers, 4 Sparrow Hawks, 3 Red-tailed Hawks and a smaller short-winged hawk, gray underneath. Drove over to Gold Lake Beach resort, over very bad road but found no room. Established at Gold Lake Lodge before noon. In afternoon walked by trail to Bear Lake. Found first 17 birds on following list. Saw in evening Mt. Bluebird, Pacific Nighthawk and White-crowned Sparrow near camp and at dusk heard song of Hermit Thrush.
July 28. Slept under stars which were wonderfully brilliant after moon set. Very quiet - the morning heard Warbling Vireo (singing), Cassin Vireo (call). On way to Bear Lake found most of the birds seen yesterday and added Pileolated Warbler (came within 5 ft. in willows; Toluca Warbler (fullplumage). Beyond Little Bear Lake there were Blue-fronted Jays. Saw near Bear Lake two white billed Swallows (Tree?) and as I went back to camp saw a flock of about 20 white-billed Swallows - too far away to identify.
