At 5:30 discovered a fire running on this 40 acre ranch. All went to fight it with wet rakes, shovels etc- Worked till 9 p.m. About 8 p.m. I went to Glencoe for help. Men loathe to come - Finally got one man to come with me and two more turned up as we left at 9 p.m. Sunday May 23 - Showers - chilly - Rested, read dinner with Seymours at 5 C.M. - Turkey. May 24. Left about 9 a.m. Mrs. S. gave us a goose, eldeberry jelly, eggs to take home - Returned via Railroad Flat, Mt. Ranch, San Andreas, Stockton, Tracy, Livermore, Dublin Canyon. Cold - Mr. Tangers at ranch - just arrived - Now heard before - Mr. Mt. Ranch saw Slender-billed Willetch, List May 19-24- Bittern (mr. Marshing) Killdeer ( foothills m. water ) Black Tern (mr. Sacramento) Quail - ranch etc - Mourning Doves - at. Upper Souran - Yoshank (?) 40 acre Ranch. Burrowing Owl - mr. Done Caly Woodpecker - Ranch etc. ab. Red-shafted Flicker - Ranch etc. Poor Will - ranch Humming bird (sp.? mall) ranch W. Kingbird - Sn. & Upper Souran. Black Phoebe - mt. ranch. San And. W. Wood Pewee -- '', Mt. Ranch W. Flycatcher - sand Horned Larks - mr. Done Yellow-billed Magpie m. Val. St. Steller Jay - ranch Caly Jay '' etc Red-winged Blackbirds - Valley- Tri-colored * - mr. Sacramento W. Meadowlark - ranch etc
