1927 May 24. Started on trip to Shasta. Drove over new Carquinez Bridge to Napa, St. Helena, Calistoga. Made a side trip to Petrified Forest where several giant redwoods and a pine tree have been uncovered - completely petrified. Saw geysers at Calistoga - fixed so that it can be turned on. Very warm - about 90° at Calistoga. In afternoon drove over Mt. St. Helena on a fine 7% grade road to Middleton then Lower Lake and Austin's resort where we picked out our $100 lot - 25 x 100 ft. Took one in open, looking down a street which is to be planted to four rows of black walnut trees. The lake and Mt. Konobe are beautiful with great white oaks in the foreground. On the way to Napa Brewer Blackbirds feed on the ground just at the edge of the highway without being bothered by passing machines - Most conspicuous birds were Brewer and Red- winged Blackbirds and Meadowlarks - Bluebirds conspicuous near St. Helena. At Calistoga Yellow Warblers, Warbling Vireos and House Wrens were singing. On the way to the Petrified Forest Black-throated Gray Warblers, Ash-throated Flycatchers, Grosbeaks and Bush Tits were seen. On Mt. St. Helena near top, Yellow Warbler, Grosbeak, Green-backed Goldfinch and Tanagers were heard. When we arrived at Clear Lake a number of Band-tailed Pigeons were seen in the tops of the digger pines.
