1927 Dec. 13. A juncos came to table for seeds. Dec. 14 " " " " " " Bird for report. Dec. 18. Drove to Walnut Creek, Martiney - huge flock of blackbirds near Walnut Creek over plowed ground - (1000 t) Dec. 22, 23, 24 - heavy frost in early morning. Spotted Towhees back. [banded] " on table Dec. 25 - rainy - or cloudy - warmer. Heard often in brush: Dec. 26. Clear, warmer. Drove to Napa via Carquinez Bridge, returning via Richmond ferry. A huge flock of blackbirds (1000+) between Napa and Ignacio & many juncos. Many gulls at Napa and other places above Valleys - in some places the ground was white with them - A few M. Grebes on bay - Red-t. & Sp. Hawks & Shrikes - Dec. 27 - partly rainy. Song Sparrow with new band on table. Dec. 28 " " Titmouse on table. Clearing Dec. 29 - Banded Golden-crowned Sparrow on table. Drove via Tunnel Road to Orinda and back by San Pablo dam. Several miles below the dam a St. Blue Heron was seen in a field, and just beyond a Road Runner flew across the road from the left (S.), perhaps 25 ft. above the ground and alighted in a large willow near the stream. When I stopped the car he dropped down into the small willows in the stream bottom. As he crossed the road I saw the long body and tail which suggested a magpie. When he alighted in the tree I saw the brown-streaked plumage and crest. Merits (2) came to table for fat. P.M. 10 Sp. Fox Sparrows feeding on a [illegible] Dec. 30. Overcast - no rain. Quail ate nearly 3 cups of seeds, remaining near the house apparently all day. Many other birds eager for food - 25-29 in flock
