Aug. 31. Green-backed Goldfinches feeding, teaching young. Thrashers imitating par-hears call of olive-sided Flycatcher; Brown-tits eating coffee berries. Anna Hummingbird taking honey from red Eucalyptus blossoms - Drove to Los Gatos.
Sept. 1. Drove from Los Gatos to Boulder Creek. Walnut fruit trees & rose, incidentally very warm at noon. Cassin Vireos sang. Saw many juncos, family of quail, chickadees, purple finch, creper, Coast Jay and Anna Hummingbird. Birds less abundant than at Rosewood Rd. Drove home in afternoon.
Sept. 2-5. Heavy fog at night, clearing in middle of day - air chilly and days shorter. Thrasher, Vireo, Song Sparrows singing. Russet-backed thrush calls at dawn. Willow woodpecker frequently heard; also Hutton Vireo.
Sept. 6. Hot
Sept. 7. Saw W. Flycatcher in Mrs. Blake's garden and Kingfisher. Cooler.
Sept. 8. Drove to Middleton and back. Many (12 +/-) Kildeers on lawn at Napa institution. Many(100+) Crows in field or flying over near Middleton, Bad fire in ruts. South of Middleton - Mrs. Bennett told me she saw five deer - driven out by fire. Her boy caught a buck which fell when chased by him on a horse - but got away again. Many Lark Sparrow. Calif. Woodpeckers an W. Bluebirds at their ranch and near by. Vultures noticed. Kildeer near Plummer's Geyser at Calistoga. Meadowlarks singing repeatedly there. Gypsy-women waited on telling fortunes.
Sept. 11. Light rain in evening. Titmouse came for melon seeds.
