May 17. (contin.). Reached Log Tavern at Clear Lake Park before noon and remained Clear, warm to hot (88°). No fog or rain. till May 24. List of birds found: Western Grebes - many - calling loudly even during night. Gulls (California) - seen across the lake once and inland from Upper Lake, twenty or more. Gt. Blue Heron - many on the Lower Lake and crowded (30+) on stream that flows into lake above Lakeport. Black-crowned Night Herons - often seen flying over Lower Lake. About 50 on stream above Lakeport. Anthony Green Heron - a pair (nesting?) in willows at Austin - Also a pair among the other herons on the stream above Lakeport. Spotted Sandpiper - seen or heard in two different places on Lower Lake Ducks - (Merganzer - Fish duck?) - 4 flew up as we passed in speed boat at night. Coots - above Lakeport. Mourning Doves - ab. everywhere. Calif. Duck - ab. Buzzards - many - 3 feeding on rabbit which had been run over on road to Sulphur Mine. Red tailed Hawk - 1. Sparrow Hawks - 2 at Austin. Calif. Woodpeckers - very abundant among White Lilies. Muttall " - 2 Flicker general. Meadow Lark - ab. B. Oriole - many - Brewer Blackbird ab. Redwinged Blackbird - Lakeport. Yellow-headed Blackbird, above Lakeport.
