1927 Feb. 7. Clear. Went to Lake Meritt with Mrs. Elmore where we found the Wood Duck reported by Mr. Carn and Mr. Mead. It spent most of its time in the fresh water drains which run down from the feeding pen into the lake - Occasionally swam out near the margin of the lake. As four o'clock approached it tried several times to fly up over the wall (about two feet high) to go with the other ducks to the feeding pen but could not because all the flight feathers of the left wing were missing. The Wood Duck is about the size of a coot; has short yellow legs and toes in as it waddles. The bill has a black tip, white on upper mandible, edged with red which is bare at the base. The eye is bright scarlet, black in the center. The long crest feathers which droop at the back of the head shade from green to deep lavender, and are edged with white which divides the crest by a median line: . The breast is a bronzy brown finely spotted, abdomen white, sides deep tan finely vermiculated, back and wings, tail and under tail coverts deep violet, speculum deep bright blue. Feb. 8. Clear, crisp. East wind at night. Feb. 9. East wind. Views wonderful-
