P. DeBenedictis 1965 30 June Barrow, Alaska of water or most of it; turning green. As I had been told there were large numbers of birds out on the marsh, mostly dowitchers, Golden Plovers and Pectoral Sandpipers, with a scattering of almost everything else. I went out to the 1st flock of birds I could see along the rim and the third bird I looked at, I couldn't identify - it proved to be some sort of a Charadrius plover, probably mongolicus. I thus worked on to a group of Semipals. To look for a Rufous-rumped Sandpiper seen yesterday and found one, which appeared only to have one leg; the next flock of small peep had 2 more! I thus went out through the marsh to look for a "Great Knot" (which was this plover) that had been seen with some dowitchers yesterday - by walking almost to the center of the marsh and checking all groups of shorebirds I could find, especially dowitchers. Nothing odd. The distribution of shorebirds on the marsh was probably were indicative of feeding behavior than a number of observations, as conditions were rather uniform throughout. No Bairds or White-rumps were seen in the marsh; the Rufous-necked, Westerns and Semipals were all along the edge, usually in ground with shallow water and disturbed by skates. The Phalaropes were rather evenly distributed over the entire area, and Pectorals, Dowitchers and Plovers were more numerous towards the center of the marsh than along the perimeter; the latter 3 species tended to occur in groups and

P. De Benedictis 1925 11 July Barrow, Alaska Variety than around the lab. Most of the area is low and wet, either rather boring muskegs or low-relief low polygons and small, relatively shallow lakes were not infrequently seen, and two large lakes, Ikroaviit and a complexly shaped (probably composite of smaller ones) lake to the west were visited; Ikroaviit was ice-covered except along the rims and thus was their ice on other of its smaller lakes. The appearance of the muskegs was not much different than close to the lab. The uplands here were largely rough, steep relief high polygon largely void of birds except jaegers and the few owls seen. Lemmings workings were wide spread and scattered individuals were noted almost everywhere, as well as a lone weasel. I would guess populations are comparable to those closer in. Poor jaegers appeared to be in the 15-20, closer to 20, /mi² level and no groups nor any old birds or other species were noted: few glaucous gulls were seen. Only 3 pairs of owls were noted and two nests, both with young, were visited. Pectorals and Phalaropes were the commonest species of shorebirds, and dunlins were conspicuous, the only species calling much; other than these only a few Golden Plovers, in flocks and dowitchers were seen, plus the 1st white-rump I have seen in some time. Loons were seen in all its larger lakes, all Arctic Tred-flu. and an Arctic Nest was found; Steller's Eiders were scattered, a group of males being seen, and Oldsquaws were common on
Page 133
P. De Benedi\n1965 38 15 July Barrow, Alaska The Baird's nests were gone. Found two new Semipalmated wast. There was nothing in Shicnut Marsh and a brozest along lines II and III was a blank. Came in wet and Tired and spent the afternoon in the car circulating. In the evening went out with Hamilton to take in lines II-III; nothing but a longspur caught. A close longer made a good tool for picking up the tips. It cleared up and the wind shifted to the west in the evening and the few shorebird seen here include a flock of golden plover; a small group of Common Eider were seen over Holmes Island and a large loon, post Yellowbill. was seen on the way in. Saw the 1st fledgling Snow Bunting of the year in camp about noon. Stayed computing in the evening. Only song: Red-thr. lorn. 16 July Stayed in the morning and in the afternoon went with Hamilton to Elson baygon to look for what was there, and to check jaeger nests. The sky was partial cloudy, the wind strong from the east and it rained towards 6 pm. It was quiet, a few Turnstone + Plover calls being almost the only bird noises made. There were very little to be seen until we got to the road to Elson, although we saw 2 groups of Eider while going out. Found 2 jaeger nests, one with a piped egg, just after we crossed the Beach ridge and one nest found earlier has been destroyed. There is still another nest in the area but I can't seem to find it. The birds are sitting and there are a few moss breeders along the longoon. We saw
Page 135
P. DeBenedictis 1965 39 16 July Barrow, Alaska several flocks of Eiders all going Nward 98.9. Finals along the lagoon and a few small groups of Oldsquaw, many on the water. The Brent nest is still ok but down is all over now. One of the dunlin nests had been stepped upon and we didn't check the others - photographed the ptarmigan nest. Saw L.T. jaeger for the 1st time in a while. There was a small group of Pctinals out in Holmes's Marshes and a few scottland Gs, but other than dunlin there were almost no Calidris about and very few Phalaropes, those seen all 8's. Found one of the "lost" jaeger nest and in it 1 egg, 14 young & the egg shells; the nest was found June 22+ contained one egg. It appears to have been the one with 2 eggs June 24; meaning, a short incubation or more likely a long interval between eggs. Stayed in this evening, nearly finishing the calculations I am working on. 17 July Again stayed in the A.M. writing notes and working on the calculation. In the afternoon went to VOTD (though) to work fragments and to try to photograph some shorebird chicks, successfully on both accounts. I found both pairs of dunlin that were there last time and two chicks, and also 2 pairs of Semipals with chicks, each with two chicks only as far as I could tell. I also found a new Semipal nest. Several of the nests were empty and at least two appear to have hatched successfully. There was a pair of Br. Jaeger in the empty areas here last time and one acted like it had a nest. little change in bird stay. I walked IIBA
Page 137
P. DeBenedictis 1965 17 July Bearow, Alaska finding birds only along IIA in its ponds and II-III, finding a flock of Pectorals. There were first, more Pectorals and double than Phalaropes around! Saw a Peregrine Falcon. The 1 y.g. pup, nest empty, saw one egg, and I couldn't find the Semipols in a very brief search. Some of the shorebird chicks can really run. Hamilton said some of the Hazelnut nests are building and went to 1 and 6. There was nothing at 6, but at least 1 Semipol in the area, nor anything in the heap. Nest trees (bald cypress) and the young were just basking at Nest 1. Saw two flocks of Eiders, one that looked to be 5 or 6 eiders or terns and one unidentifiable. 18 July Rained almost all day. Didn't go out. Finished calculations. 19 July Rained am., more or less clear in the afternoon. Wind from west and damp all day. Ice blew back in in the early afternoon and really going by in the evening. In the afternoon tried to take weasel to set out, IAT, IAS, but it overheated before we got event to #ACS so we walked to meadow lake and then back and I got my vehicle back to camp. The area is about like late June in terms of water, and very few shorebirds on the ground. Two of the nests have hatched out. Saw a flock of Oldsquaws and a h-T. Jaeger by meadow lake and the snowy owl nest is really doing well, 4y., (almost ready to fly). In the evening watched the boat for a while, seeing loon, oldsquaw, Taleids (?), Arctic Tern, h-T. Jaeger, Glaucous and a probable I.S. green Herring Gulls, and 27 Eiders.
Page 147
P. De Benedictis 1965 24 July Barrow, Alaska Birds on the ocean or near lines IV - phalaropes and jaegers at the lathe only. There was a lot more action at lines III, where there were at least 2 pairs of semipalmated with young and a pair of dunlin with young plus a flock of Golden Plover and 3-4 apparently non-breeding Semipalmated. Heard two Ptarmigan, loud. The jaegers, nuts unchanged except that another marker gone and can't find traces of the nest though the pair present. Bob had the "runs" and took the vessel in, I walked in later. Shots from duck camp in the evening and night. A few vocationally and birdwatching said he had seen 2 Buff hawks that he thought had young near VOTH and Hamilton, he and I went out about 9 to look, without success. The area was the flat just west of Bostline and his birds probably migrants. We saw 2 pairs of golden plover that acted like they had young + 3-4 pairs of Dunlin and Semipalmated - even though no nests had been found in the area - saw 2 large semipalmated chicks and the 15' phalarope chicks of this year. Found a jaeger nest and another was empty, though jaegers present, and most surprisingly saw 3 White Plovers. The 6-egg Steller Eider nest OK. The pool nest with 5 young in the pool, 1 o'clock - 15/2 evenings along the edge. Got in about 1 AM. and wrote notes. 25 July A woken early by McLean and by 7:30 Bob and I were off to try and catch up with him in one of the old, beat-up vessels - after picking up trap lines III+IV. It was
Page 149
P.DeBenedictis 1965 25 July Barrow, Alaska Clear and not very windy, a warm beautiful day in awe we had to walk. We ran lines III + IV in 20 minutes! seeing little (and catching little) then took off for Footprint lake where we were supposed to meet McLean- who wasn't there. This was important as he not only knew where we were going but also had our lunches. I then went down to Ikravik, where he was still not to be seen. Found a weasel road along the west side and followed it south the length of Ikravik and the next large lake south. Here we gave up and decided to work back along the east side of this lakes, finding a Cabine Grill, Arctic Teen Colony about 1/2 mi. E of the southeast end of the next large lake south of here. We then found McClean and followed him to the N. end of Lake Sungovak, about 14 miles due south of the Lab area. Here Bob and I turned back, going east about a mile then around two lakes and 10 to 15 gas well and along the same route in home, getting in about 5:30. The country here is clear and much of it is quite low and flat, the relief being mostly areas of high center polygons. The major feature of the landscape was the large lakes, mostly oriented N-S and all but the largest and deepest ice free. The area is much more uniformly grass covered than around the Lab and the marshes were quite green! considerable shallow standing waters. Birdwise there were no large flocks of anything, except Golden Plovers, and thinly only 6 about 10, and female Steller's Eiders, but
Page 151
P.DeBenedict 1965 25 July Barrow, Alaska Shorebirds, Jaegers, Snowy Owls and Oldsquaws widely and generally distributed. Saw downy young dunlins (three weeks), golden plover and dowitcher and found a nest of Red Phalarope. Saw my 1st Oldsquaw and Sabine's Gull nests, and checked one Snowy Owl nest. Hemmings appeared to be somewhat more numerous here than at the lab and were found in some very wet areas. No other swell Mammal seen. Jaegers somewhat less common as one goes south of Ithavish but probably a reflection of the low wet topography; no change in Snowy Owls. Nothing that really surprised us except the dowitchers, and pleased to have had a brief look at the Sabine's Gulls. 26 July. Stayed in the A.M. finishing my notes. Went out to duck camp in the afternoon but few eiders going by, mostly Kings and a few Common; only 1n2's. Oldsquaws going both ways as usual, and gulls not doing much. The Kittiwakes were all adults and the nests were fairly far out; the Parasitic Jaeger was a light placed bird. One prob. Yellow bill and several small loons, only led thr. for sure. In the evening went with Bob. to IIT+IA. Few birds in the area, and it was quiet. Two jaeger nests with 2 eggs, 1 piped +1 cracked; one with 1 young +1 egg and found a 1 egg nest of a pair that began to act like they were nesting c. July 17. No other pairs in the area. Then 3 were 2 & King Eider on a pool near II and the last semipalmated nest with 2 eggs + 1 chick. Watched the ocean for a short while but

DeBenedictis 1965 49 July 27 Bureau, Alaska Puffin and a smallish gray colored bird following too either Murre or Oldsquaw, which was either a winter plumage quillenmet or a Kitzlit's Humlet, prob. the former. The eiders seen were mostly going east and several '4 Somatevica were seen. In the evening went back to lines III+IV, to check nest 17. It was cold and the eggs collected. They weighed 5.9 and 6.8 gms and were infertile. Saw a few murre and oldsquaws and most of the King Eiders along the shore; It had been clear and windy from the W.E all day and about 4 it clouded up and rain after about 6. Pood day. July 28 Stayed in this morning due to wind and light rain and in the afternoon went to lines III+IV with Hamilton Saw a small forked eider, prob. King, on the way; there was little near the Trap line and the area was quiet. Watched the ocean for a while seeing a few murre and K. Hwakes all going east, and a few small groups of eiders going west. Stayed in the evening. July 29 Went out by the Ocean for about 1/2 hour seeing 1 Par, 1+ L-T. Jaeger, 2 Murre (1 Thick-bill) and a K. Hiwake and Lots of eiders too far out to identify. In the afternoon went to central Marsh with Hamilton and after setting line IV walked to Elson hogoon to check jaegers and watch eiders. There was almost nothing on the Marsh beet the golden plover from the Cerulel Waniagar moved over to Pikelka's plot and were screaming away. Saw both chicks of the jaegers down by the 10.0 end of line IV,

P. DeBenedictis 1965 4 June Mlade River Cool Mine, 157°25'W, 70°29'N, Alaska When I arrived at the AF Wannigan. There was an Arctic Tern along the river. Few birds along the lower part of the creek but 2 pairs golden plover, 2 pectoral sandpipers and 1 pair dunlin and a couple of semipalmateds. There was a strange song coming from W of the village which turned out to be Western Sandpiper, and the juncos were still along the creek. There were semipalmateds, clunshus and pectorals in the cattail marsh behind the village and two trees in the village. Pintails active on the village plots plus a few pectorals, dunlins and semipalmateds. The dunlins were mostly up in the marshes, the pectorals in the marshes and not polytypic, and the semipalmateds distributed areas. A Redpoll came into camp and there were two white-crowned and a Fox Sparrow then Walker and Red Phalaropes both flying about and possibly 8 Beds are now in the area. A couple of Sahis Bells came through camp about noon. Slept most of the afternoon and past 6 so it could stay up all night. About 11 P.M. got up and sat around until midnight; 5 June when I started out for the "census" plot. A white-crowned Sparrow was singing by the cool mine and continued singing until 8 P.M. off and on, and another song from 2 miles down on the far side of the river. A little longhorn activity but most are asleep and most of the shorebirds I saw were sleeping apparently so until about a quarter of 2. A group of geese flew over, but little activity. About 2 P.M. everything woke up

P. DeBenedictis 1466 Journal - 26 5 June Meade River Coal Mine, 151025W, 70029N. Alcubierre look at it. A few more Pomarine Jaegers came through camp during the afternoon. About 5 I went out in back of camp for a while, and watched shorebirds for a while - there was a pair of westerns, the male of which sang from the ground behind the lab freezer, along the edge of a pool, and phalaropes started feeding there. Semipalmate now morning into three creeks. Went into the village to try for wogtails in the evening, without success. Only a white-crown in Canada, but several Old squaws flew over + 2 Spectacled Eiders. A pair of Western Sandpipers here, the 1 singing W of the village. Dowitchers again conspicuous and noisy. More dunlins and pecterals, now many 1s, are present, and the few phalaropes are increasing in #s. Several plovers behind camp now and saw a 2? N. Phalarope [illegible] Quit about 11 PM and went to bed. Running out of paper! 6 June. Raining the A.M. Cloudy - overcast and very windy the P.M. Went to the village about 8 to try for wogtails but no luck. There was little near camp - a new pair of dunlins air - and along the creek about as usual, except almost 40 wogtail activity. The only dirty bird was a singing Whimbrel. Sparrows in the village. There were 13? L-T. Jaegers in the village salty garbage plus gulls and the local parasites. Shot a longtail but didn't get it. Only 2? Turnstones now and more Pectorals than ever. It's really conspicuous.

P. De Beerschill 1966 Journal -27 June 6 Meade River, Cordova, Alaska, 157°25'W, 70°29'N, There was a pair of Western Sandpipers feeding with the semipalmated sandpiper on the dirt road through the village. Shot first and very low hit that; another male singing (The birds behind camp were later). A few oldsquaws going over. The river is very wet now and a large group of glaucous gulls congregated here and several groups of Sabine's Gulls going over most of the A.M., plus a few terns. I stayed out to about 11:30, then chased some birds out and spent the afternoon putting them up. A few jaegers in the evening, but nothing exciting. Foggy and very windy. Temporal and west. Sandpipers feeding along the edge of the melt pools behind camp all day long, and a few phalaropes are down on the ground now. Longspurs understandably quiet today. As of 3 days ago, dowitchers are some miles from nesting. June 7 More cummy weather. got up late and didn't get out until the afternoon. Went behind camp, to Kinchak Lake, the village ridge & flats and back to camp. Out about 4 miles from 2 P.M. It remained very windy and snow-bailed much of the late afternoon and evening. The wind was blowing so hard that the birds got down in the high grass and I couldn't see what they were doing. Birds are rather concentrated locally, except longspurs. Near camp saw phalaropes, dunlin, pectoral and semipalmated (flushed) a pair of Spectacled Eiders. There is little on the far side of the lake basin and only a few birds are moving into the lake basin as it opens up.

P. DeBeauchamp 1465 Journal - 34 10 June Meadle River Cool Mine, 15°25'W, 70°24'N, Alaska loon calling from the area to the south. A couple of pectrals and several phalaropes the only shorebirds noted, plus a golden plover. 6 (3?) Steeler's Eider & flown by about 18:30. dull day on the whole. 11 June Went out to shoot 1/2 of the cottage (out the creek went and I can't get across now! Went 5 along south ridge and in the lakes basin in stead, but it was a waste of time. I went along the rivers to South creek, then along the ridge two miles, and back to the river nine or less directly. Total birds seen - 1/2 golden, 1/2 Black-belly Plover (ridge), 3(5?) dunlin (near cormorant plot); 4/2 Semipalm (corm plot - 2, lake bottom E of South ridge, 2), 15 Pectoral Sandpiper - mostly lake bottom - lots mole clayey; 10 W. Phalarope, 50 Red Phalarope. One West. Sandpiper in flight, singing. Longspurs are common - got only a dunlin bird shot at a 4 pectoral and a Black belly Plover - saw only 3-4 stonebirds feeding except the phalaropes. Really slow. Found a longspur nest. The Wagtail hasn't done much to this nest? abandoned, but she is still around. Saw some ? que exp. behavior. lots of color variation in both sexes of this species. No geese up yet to any extent. This found plant cropping near the mine. Stayed in the afternoon skimming the dunlin and cormorant this evening. Put up another dunlin, and salvaged the birds I shot earlier. June 8 birds were 5-7 days from hatching.

P. De Benedictis 1962 Journal 16 June Bear Creek, to Heebe River Coal Mine, 15°05' W, 70°20' N, Alaska In the morning went with Pitelka out to his cove plot and walked along it a ways, across central bluffs, and along Elson hogback + Wohlshlag to the cove plot. There were lots of longspurs in the area, and few shorebirds. On the ridge I saw only dunlins and semipals. While going out. A few phalaropes near Holme's Holes, and flying over elsewhere. Along Elson Lagoon a little dunlin activity and 2 Pectorals and 1F. Lots of terns but they only made alarm noises. Saw two nests: There and Nick found dunlins, once found a dunlin nest. Along Wohlshlag, semipal - One pectoral by the Beach Ridge and 2 Golden Plovers. A white-crowned sparrow singing. h.t.l.e on pitelka's plot - some semipal activity and we found a dunlin + 2 longspurs nests. In general the bird activity high but it's generally low even compared with last year. Essentially no pectorals here and few phalaropes. Filled afternoon without break to Heebe River with Steiner and walked out 8 of camp most of the afternoon. Very quiet until about 4:30, when semipals and westerns and dowitchers began to sing. A little dunlin activity and as at Bear Creek they are starting the primary molt. We saw the Paveristic Jaeger nest and were tied up to a fine distraction display, and did two eggs now. At least 4 westerns near by and lots of song. Searched a Semipal after nest, which we couldn't find and found a 5 egg. longspur nest.

P. De Benedictis 1966 Journee 21 June Meadele River Coal Mine, 150°25'W, 70°24'N, Alaska up here. Lots of Pedicularis and Arenare in flower, and some of the grasses are starting. In the afternoon I found the banded Wagtail's nest and 2 Phalaropes nests, and saw one & longspur on the plot I can't account for, and one near a nest I couldn't find just off the plot. I am pretty sure of the location of two pairs of nests, which I can't actually find. A western Sandpiper in the area, but its semipalmated that were along the river seem now to have moved off the plot. Probably two pairs of dunlin partly on the plot. Probably now only a few pairs of longspur and a couple of phalaropes to go, but we'll see. When I came in at noon found a White-crowned Sparrow nest with 4 eggs, so I know they breed here. A Savannah Sparrow briefly sang from the same plot. A very successful day. In the evening went to the dunes 5 opens on the "orbow" of the Headle. The dunes were surprising barren, only longspur seen, but in this sand foot prints of Fox and squirrel. Around the post, longspur and ?gull prints in the mud plus a little ?plover and much Semipalmated Sandpiper. Few flowers on the dunes now, mostly Arenare, but lots of willows, mostly S. obovata, and a little I. richardsonii, set with some leaves. Elymus, Poa?, and Carex formed boot mats, but the sand is clearly blown. Inland of the dunes extensive Carex marsh with a good Semipalmated Sandpiper population and at least 1 & Black-bellied

P. De Benedetti 1966 Journal 24 June Meade River Coal Mine, 157°25'W, 70°29'N, Alaska Rained almost all day. Caught a longspur in a trap and spent the afternoon restoring it. P. Telko left about 4:30. About 5:00 stopped raining and I went to try for the wagtail without screens; An Arctic tern "fishing" in the cany pools by the 1,5 stakes. Spent the evening collecting plants along village creek, finding Androsache neus, and lots of Dryas and Darapen. 25 June The rain has stopped and the wind died down a little. About 9:30 went across the river opposite Wdunes to collect birds for Steve. There was a Merganser in the river. The flats were not very good, but there was a group of 6 redpolls in the willows (S. richardsonii) along the flood plain, of which I shot two—one flew away when I picked it up.
