20 June Meacle River Coal Mine, 157°25'W, 70°24'N, Alaska.
By lake by the trop was accessed. On the June
the usual absence of everything except longspur.
In the village flats saw 1-2 Phalarope (Red)
and several Semipals, none [illegible] and
the usual longspurs and Savannah Sparrow.
Found a 5 egg or a 4 egg longspur nest
near lake. I made mark at the far end of the
trap lines. Slept part of the afternoon and then went to
set a few traps by the mine shaft and collect a few plants.
There were three cedpools chasing about in the willow,
and one was singing a lot. The white lump of these
birds very conspicuous. Set the loops between the mine
and plot's transit in polygon troughs, but not much
mouse activity. Spent the evening in camp.
21 June Got up early in the A.M. and spent most of the day
on the census plot looking for units. A quiet day, winds,
and a high of 72. Nest feeding was good. In the
morning I found 3 longspur and a Semipal nest on
the plot, all by watching birds go on. Longspur female
is low, and many transients are going through the
area now, all in good plumage. A few -1 or 2- lane
Golden plovers seen going rapidly down the river. Two
long-tail Jaegers spent most of the day on the plot,
foraging actively and appearing to catch small
birds. About 11 a Parasitic Jaeger cleaned out
the Petrel nest and was chased away by a long-tail
Jaeger. They act like they see thinkery of setting
