28 May Meade River Coal Mine, 157°25'W, 70°29'N, Alaska
Sparrow. No shorebirds but 2+ gulls and a few
White-Fr. Geese flew over. There were two
more Savannah Sparrows and a few longspurs
in camp when I returned. At the far
end of the levees here there is considerable
Squirrel Activity, and I saw 2 on this
side of the river plus 1 or 2 on the far side.
No other mammals. The # of longspurs
was much increased even compared with
last night. The mid-afternoon was spent 1:30 to 3:30 and then I walked N along the
Meade to the low area beyond the exposed
high sand dunes, 2 miles N of camp. It
was nearly calm but snowing lightly when
I left and this continued until about a quarter
of 5, and it was clear & slightly cloudy when I
returned. Bird activity was low. There were
a few longspurs and a Bunting near the village
and 7 longspurs on the ridge opposite Tkmakake
Lake. There was a Pterinigar and 3 Pectoral
Sandpipers sleeping in high cutried polygon grass
to grass and low willow, and a flock of 11-13
longspurs and 3 Savannah Sparrows in
a grassy high polygon just beyond this. I came
back through the flat along the river, seen
2 longspurs, 6 Pterinigars and 5 Savannah
Sparrows; there were ones or 2 squirrels and
