P. D. Beedell 1966 Journal 17 July Woodle River Coal Plain, 157°25'W, 70°27'N. North Windy and overcast. After the A.H. strike I went to the census plot to see how deer were going. See whole area timbering, more paint, all the trees. There was a noticeable decrease in the # of shrubbirds in the area and also off the plot, some for Red Phalaropes. The cattle were very active and came on to the plot from across distance away, almost alert, like they had chicks, though they gave no indication while on the ground. They and a pair of plovers were in nearby areas in the pollynized ground on the plot. Longspurs were widely spaced and much decreased from the last visit to the plot. They still don't seem to have begun their post-nuptial molt. Just one fledgling was seen. No foerger this time. The afternoon on the Nath Dunes helping Dr. Argus with dune willow-collecting, which is very interesting. A long-tail jaeger spent some time chasing young longspurs. Wind came up very strong and it rained in the evening. 18 July Tried to make the plane come. Went out along the river with Phil and then onto the census plot to see what was on the pond. The golden plovers were in the same region as last time and we found a phalarope's pectoral sandpiper's nest with 4 eggs near the census plot.
