Journal - 3
16 May Barrow, Alaska
Finally got a pair of boots and the rest of the
equipment I need to begin to function in the
field. The gun situation was not good, got a .410
shotgun + 2 boxes of shells, which should hold me
until early June the way things are going. Rae
bunting singing in camp today. In the AM took
weasel 385 out to Pitelka's causer plot paralleling
the Beach Ridge. Nothing. The ridge is about
97% to show covered except on Pitelka's plot,
where it is only 95% covered. The low areas
are out of the question - I suppose there is
9-10" of snow on Central Marsh. The exposed
areas are bare, a moss-lichen covered and
with a little grass. In the afternoon went to
footprint lake and Gasline Ridge. The
areas here is 95% covered, even on the ridge.
Saw once (? old) Weasel prints and some
twice ? dog prints on the snow and found
an owl wound which has been used within
the last 1+ months, as scatia is on top of the
snow here. A few petasites and pedicularis
stalks above the snow. Both area almost
all under snow, to 20" in places, except for
oil cans. Coming in saw 16 King Eiders (8 pairs),
and a flock of about 35-45 Snow Buntings, three
feeding along the edge of S Salt Lagoon. Nothing
new in camp.
