P. DeBenedictis 1965 42 21 July Barrow, Alaska Slept late and went out after lunch to check the nests on Pikelka's plot - all had failed except the eider and possibly dunlin as I heard them on the plot. Saw kittiwake on the way out - beat a small group of jaegers which turned out to be long-tail. They proved to be scattered all over the marsh, most on the ground where they could barely be seen, and 1-2 Arctic Terns were with them. Few shorebirds - a flock of ratting-looking golden Plovers on Pikelka's plot with 2 dunlin and a group of Pectrals with 2 other plovers just N of the plot, and 1-2 phalaropes flying about. We went to Elson hapoon to check on the jaegers and watch eiders. Of the nests there must be 1 and many 2 young; a few still in eggs. One pair has disappeared - a snowy owl by the old nest. Few shorebirds - the golden plovers hatching today. Saw lots of eiders and a few oldsquaw, 1 L-T. Jaeger and 2 nice Arctic Terns. One longspur with no tail really threw me at first. Came in about 5 and spent the evening catching up on my notes. The ice blew out sometime during the night and the lead was clear cell day. 22 July Got up early and after finishing my notes went out behind the lab to check nests.
