17 June
Barrow, Alaska
Temp. 25 in the morning; wind still from the east
and considerable snow during the night. It
looks like June 9. Bob Hamilton and I went out
to the area between Family and S. Salt lagoon,
where we found fairly good numbers of birds; activity
was low, due to heavy winds and it snowed
lightly twice while we were out. Found a egg
(sp?) behind the shelter of a mound, and
saw little other evidence of nesting behavior. Few
geese here compared to earlier. The bluebirds
are still quite social and Baird's is surprisingly
scarce although the others are beginning to show
in fair numbers. The Sandlring were all over
the place. We got in about noon + then went
out with Dr. Pitelka about 1:30 to 4:30 to the
same area, working further inland. Found
a jager's nest and saw nest egg display of
White-rump; There are still sandlring everywhere
and Lemmings activity was more noticeable.
Spent a lot of time photographing; It didn't
snow and we saw more display, but most activity
was feeding. Melt is taking place but hundred
(?) its amount of fresh snow falling. Defrost the
pools froze during the night.
18 June It was much warmer today due to the almost
complete absence of wind. Melt is proceeding
slowly. Didn't get out at all in the morning and
