9 July Needle River Coal Mine, 157°25'W, 70°27'N, Alaska
Fledgling wagtail there as well. The wind kept up
and a little rain fell in the afternoon and evening,
so I didn't try to get net. With all the chicks about
now, it is hard to get feeding observations - much
of what I see apparently under [illegible] (compact)
conditions of the adults. Can't see the chicks at all!
10 July Spent most of the day writing notes and photos-
photographing flowers in the vicinity. Didn't do any
serious bird watching. Went down to the
village flats & dunes; nothing really there
to mention - a few of Semipals at the village
again & 1-2 Phalaropes flying over the flats.
Saw at least 6 fledgling longspurs. Didn't
get out in the evening. Put up another Wagtail
from the nest. Mosquitoes are really going crazy

Ray to look for an eider's nest, which decided not to
turn up, and then went over to see how the gudgeon
nests were going. The weather was overcast and
windy, with occasional light showers. Very little activity

Again they convert to the lake to scold (it seems to
be most active in the region just above the
lake basin). The herons were in dance, and
