3 July
Barrow, Alaska
Fair much song - no shelduck display at all. The nests were
not checked, and the turnstone still seems to be present.
There was a group of about 40 Dowitchers in VOTK slough.
On the way in saw 3 L-T. together on the ground. In
the evening went out with Hamilton to help take up
trues IX + X; there were fewer pectorals visible here
and not as much phalarope activity (due to the
drying of its area?). A group of 10 Golden Plovers
and 10 Dowitchers were along on of the remaining pools.
The latter feeding out in the pools as casual. Spent
the rest of the evening processing lemmings. Sawo jaeger
perched on a oil drum between nests [illegible] 14th bird;
5.

Slept until 10 and went with Dr. Pitelka towards the VOTK area
about noon - unfortunately, we lost a track on the creased on
the way out so I had to walk most of the way. It was
my intention to check the Dowitchers around the VOTK
area then go towards the Meadow lakes and in, which
I eventually did. It was foggy all morning, almost
calm, and cleared to overcast with occasional drizzle
and slight SE wind in the early afternoon, almost
sunny at times in the late afternoon. I went
directly to the VOTK area, where I spent some time
looking at Western Sandpipers and Dowitchers (both of
which were doing very little) and found 2 jaeger nests
here. On the way in I noticed considerable song
of Semipalmated Sandpiper in the VOTK area but others
