P. DeBenedictis 1966 Journal 15 June - Bowers, Horka In the A.M. went out in the Bower area. More Bairds here than last year, and lots of song. They and the Semipalmated very conspicuous, but Semipalmated heard about this same time as last year, I suspect. A pair Stellar's Eider went over and some ptarmigan and olds querns about. No Pectorals to speak of, which is apparently the big feature of this year. 4 Knots in this area, and heard song and some of the calls, and a Sandhill Crake. In the afternoon went to Uoth area and Village Ridge but not a lot of action. Clearly fewer birds here than last year, but similar species composition, except lack of Pectorals. h/t/10 on Village Ridge but Bairds, Semipalmated, and double-crested in Village began. A Northern Phalarope in Button's area and a Knot in Button's area with golden plovers. Not as noisy here as in the Bower Area. Apparently, phalaropes more this year. The ground cover here very unlike Meadow River. The grass feeter and more continuous - matted. Common gourd seeds are mating Solity (rotundibolia and phlebophylla) and Petasteres. The snow is a little slater. Still much evidence of last year's lemming high but no lemmings (saw one some kids from the village caused). In the evening took in the Bower area, but there was little activity and nothing changes from earlier. It's nice to know and seeing much I'm not really missing much at Peace River. weather.
